Don't Give Up On Chuck

Chuck passed the test and will be graduating this week.  He knows all of the basic commands and his extras include:  "shake", "leave it", "give", "shhh" and "back". Chuck will do his commands for his primary and secondary trainer on the first try.  He is shy when someone else gives him the commands, and it may take a couple tries, but he will do them.

His inmate trainer said Chuck is the sweetest greyhound he has trained so far.  Chuck likes to keep a close watch on his trainer and stay right by his side.  Chuck likes attention, but doesn't beg for it.  His trainer thinks, once Chuck is settled in his forever home, he will keep coming out of his shell.  He is just going to take more time than most greyhounds to adapt to his new surroundings.

Chuck does not like the loud noises at the prison or loud people.  He tends to shy away from that.  He will also bark at loud people, almost to say "Hey! Quiet down."   His inmate trainer thinks he will be much happier when he is in his forever home.  Chuck is going to be a great companion and friend.  He just needs lots of time to adjust.  Don't give up on Chuck...

Patience Is The Key...

Chuck has gotten close to his trainers and will perform all of his commands to a "T" for them.  He also knows all of his extra commands like "shake", "drop", "leave it" and "shh".

He is doing better around the other inmates too.  He still is not a fan of loud noises and loud people.   He seems to shy away from that.  Chuck needs a longer adjustment period to come out of his shell, so be patient with his sweet boy.  Once he gains your trust, he will be your best friend for life.  You can count on that.

Chuck has really grown on his inmate trainers.  They love him and are going to miss him.  Any family will love Chuck.  Patience is the key...

Sweet Boy

Here we are at the end of week seven and Chuck is still impressing his trainer with all of his commands.  He is still a little nervous around people he is not used to, but in time, once he trusts you, he is your best friend.  He just takes more time to warm up to new people.

Chuck does great around all the other dogs.  There is a female greyhound that he often will lay on the same bed.  His trainer said it's very cute to see.

Chuck likes to hoard his toys in his kennel and he will get a little possessive of them if another greyhound gets too close to the kennel.  If they are laying on the floor outside of the kennel, he is fine.  His trainer keeps his toys outside of the kennel and this has worked great.

Chuck has no issues with counter surfing or begging for food.  He may look at you while you are eating, but won't come to you unless you call him.  Chucky is calm dog and his trainer believes he will do great in his forever home.

Mr. Couch Potato

Here we are at the end of week six already.  Chucky continues to show improvement on his shyness.  He will walk up to more and more people at the prison.  He seems to still shy away from people he associates being the loudest.  He's not a fan of loud noises.  He is doing impeccably well with his commands and his behavior is great!

Chucky has started playing and running more every week.  His inmate trainer can't wait to see this boy's true personality when he totally opens up.  He has a calm demeanor most of the time, unless its time to eat.  He gets pretty excited over food!  He will now sit and wait for his food without having to be asked though.  He retains instructions well.

This week, Chucky found out his inmate trainer's bed was very comfortable.  He will jump up and lay right down.  He does know the command "down"  really well, so he will get down if asked.  He could easily become a "couch potato!"

Chuck behaves like a gentlemen around other dogs.  This week a couple dogs came to visit and Chucky walked right beside one on a walk.  Chuck is such a great dog and will be missed by everyone at the prison.  Can you open your forever home and heart to this "couch potato" of a greyhound?  He will not disappoint you.

Coming Out of His Shell

There has been a huge change in Chuck, since day one at the prison.  He was very shy when he got here, but has really started getting comfortable with his surroundings.  He seems much happier.  He will walk up to people and greet them, when he used to shy away from everyone but his primary trainer.  He still has reservations about some people, but all in all Chuck is coming around.

Chuck has picked up quickly on all of his commands.  He knows them all very well. Plus an extra "leave it."  The other day they had another primary trainer give Chuck his commands, and Chuck aced it.  They worked on stair training.  Chuck had no problems at all.  He zoomed up the stairs and he zoomed down.

He is an awesome fella; Very calm and mellow. Chuck is a great pup and will become a great pack member to his new family.

Everyone Loves Chuck!

Chuck has come so far in just four short weeks.  His inmate trainer is already thinking about how much he is going to miss this boy.  Chuck has gotten the hang of all of his basic commands now, and most are being done off-leash.  He has the "down" position perfected.  Chuck sometimes likes to go "down" when he is supposed to "sit", but they are working on that.  He also did great for Ms. Patti when they had their weekly testing session.

He started playing with toys, but loses interest fast.  When he is playing with toys he is gentle with them and doesn't chew them up, which is a plus.  He has no problem giving you his toy when you say "release".

His inmate trainer said this morning Chuck was really acting spunky.  He didn't want to play with a toy, he wanted to play with his trainer.  He said it was pretty fun, and Chuck plays like a cat; ready to pounce on you at any moment.

Chuck is doing much better around strangers.  He still will shy away, but when he gets to know you, you are good as gold to him.  He will be your companion for life.  Everyone loves Chuck!

Discovering A New Life

Chuck is doing well in his new environment.  He can be a little shy around some people, but when it’s just one on one with his inmate trainer it’s like a curtain is lifted and a brand new dog emerges.  His inmate trainer says you can just see a different light in his eyes.

This past Saturday Ms. Patti from SCG came down to check training progress and they packed 33 people and 15 dogs into a classroom and Chuck behaved perfectly! He lay down on his bed and remained calm even when the other dogs were stepping all over him!  He did a great job showing off his commands as well!  He performed his “sit” and “down” on the first request! His inmate trainer says that he was very proud of Chuck!

Chuck has opened up and started running in the big yard now and has discovered that toys are fun!  His inmate trainer is enjoying watching Chuck emerge from his shell!

Aiming To Please

Chuck is a sweet greyhound, but can be timid at times. He has started opening up more as the weeks goes on.  He has been able to walk around and explore the dorm, which has helped him open up.  His inmate trainer said there is a huge difference with Chuck towards him.  He has started to build a bond with him.  Chuck will seek him out in a crowd.

Chuck showed no excitement when he first got to the prison, but now when he gets up in the morning he shows more happiness.  He is wagging his tail and bouncing around.  He is a greyhound that will take more time to adjust to his new surroundings, so please be patient.

Chuck is very loving and aims to please.  He is catching on to this training thing.  He walks great on a leash, no pulling or lagging behind.  He heels good and has pretty good recall already as they've introduced the "here" command..  He is working on "sit", "down", "stay" and the other basic commands, and progressing nicely.

Chuck's inmate trainer feels Chuck will be an excellent companion, friend and family member.  Stay tuned for more on his training through week three!

It's Training Time!

Chucky has arrived for prison training.  He’s a little unsure of this new loud environment.  His inmate trainer says that Chucky is a sweet boy and he can see why he was a kennel favorite at the track.

So far Chucky hasn’t shown any timidness with other dogs, but can be shy with some of the new people.  Only four days have passed since his arrival, but he seems to be opening up a bit.  He loves to lay in his kennel and often times his inmate trainer doesn’t even close the door.

In the big yard Chucky has yet to take off in a full-blown run.  He seems to enjoy a nice easy lope or stroll next to his inmate trainer.  Chucky’s inmate trainer says that Chucky is a very gentle boy and doesn’t mind his grooming sessions.  He just knows that he and Chucky are going to be great friends and can’t wait to see what the coming weeks hold!
