Tsu’s First Festival

Hi, Tsu here.

Let me tell you about my Saturday. Today my foster Mom and brother Radar took me to the Pigs and Peaches BBQ festival. I was a little disappointed that I didn’t see any pigs, but all the people that stopped by the Second Chance Greyhounds tent made up for it, I guess.

My foster Mom said she was very proud of me. There were lots of people, big, little and everything in between, I loved them all. I even got to greet some doggies. The man from Sweet Zensations even brought us greyhounds some ice cream. It was perfect on a hot, humid day.

Riding in the car isn’t my favoritest thing, but I was fine because I like going places and doing things. Now I’m tired from all the excitement, so excuse me while I take another nap!

A Boy Names TSU (Sue)

Tsu resting after the ride to his foster home.

Yes, you see that right! The Johnny Cash song, while fun, doesn’t really fit this sweet boy.

He’s been here a week and settled in, almost straight away. He is a master of the carpeted stairs, and like his foster brother, spends his days with us in my upstairs home office. Recently we went on a “Hound Hike” with a group of greyhound buddies and I must say he fit right in, no aggression, just lots of mutual, friendly sniffing. He’s great on leash. With no fenced yard, we leash walk many times a day. He and his foster brother walk side-by-side and in typical “boy” fashion have to see who can leave the most ‘wee mail’ and jointly sniff all the ‘wee mail’ messages. While all the other dogs in the neighborhood have something to say as we walk by, he just keeps on walking unimpressed by the unruly ones.

He does not like thunderstorms. He has taken to hiding in my closet, where it is quiet, cool and dark. I leave him be, I check on him and he’s quiet and comfortable. He’s okay in the car, I do muzzles both dogs when in the car together, likes to poke his nose out a slightly open window. A little water in his kibble slows him down enough that he doesn’t choke, and he’s the most polite water drinker I’ve ever seen, nary a drop splashes out of the water bowl.

He remembers all his commands. I make them sit for treats, and sit and wait before they can eat breakfast and dinner, and wait as we step out the door for our walks. I’ll continue to reinforce his commands. He isn’t crated here. If I leave the house both the boys are muzzled and baby gates keep them out of off-limit rooms. I’ve seen no sign of separation anxiety.

I think he’ll make a wonderful addition to any family, without small children or small dogs and cats. He really is a sweet boy, so stay tuned for more on A Boy Named Tsu!

Gimme a Blankie!

This is Sam's last week here with us and it has been a very productive 10 weeks. He has transitioned well from athlete to pet. As his trainer has said in previous blog posts, he is a very smart dog and always quick to carry out his commands. His trainer is sure he will have no problems with his transition from prison life to home life.  The primary trainer has Sam trained to retrieve his favorite blanket. It is a really neat trick to watch him get his blanket and take it back to his kennel. So see if you can get him a new favorite blanket, because he loves to be covered up at night when he goes to bed. His trainer is sure Sam will make a great addition to your family and he is so glad to be a small part of the big picture of finding loving homes for these loving dogs. We hope you enjoy Sam!

Antenna Ears

It was time for swap week this week!  The inmates exchange dogs to work on training when commands are given from new people.  Sam’s alternate inmate trainer says that he had a wonderful time with Sam!  He says that Sam is very sharp and eager to get to work.  He did great on all commands and didn’t miss a beat being away from his normal training team.

Sam’s alternate trainer says that the best thing about Sam is his ears!  They are huge and stick straight up when something perks his interest.  With the least little sound those antenna ears go right up and he’s fascinated by whatever is going on!  Sam is full of energy and enthusiastic about each new day!

Almost Home!

Week 8 has arrived with Sam, and he is still doing great with all of his commands. He is always eager to interact with everyone and loves his play time. He has a couple of favorite toys that he really enjoys. One is a large ball and the other is a squeaky dinosaur. He will sit and speak for both of these toys when asked to. With only 2 weeks left until Sam is scheduled to graduate, his trainer feels good about how he will acclimate from the life of an athlete to that of a pet. He takes Sam out every evening and lets him lay on his bed and watch TV in the day room and he behaves so well. He really enjoys being around people and is an all-around great dog. His trainer is sure that you will love having him in your home and in your heart.

Kiss Me!

Sam has had another positively productive week!  He’s sharp on all his command with both hand signal and verbal cues.  His inmate trainer says that Sam has a unique heel.   When told to “heel” he jumps back in the heel position as if to say, Ta Da, maneuver complete!  Sam and his inmate trainer have been working on a couple of extra commands, Bow and Kiss. and Sam is doing really well with both.

Sam’s inmate trainer says that Sam is a wonderful boy who will listen to anything you have to say anytime you need a friend.  Sam’s not one to make any snarky remarks when you’ve gone and done something wrong or just need to talk something out.

His inmate trainer says it’s been a blessing working with Sam and he’s going to miss him when it’s time to graduate, but knows that Sam is destined for a wonderful full life filled with happiness.

Ears Up!

Sam isn't just a really great greyhound - he's a really great, top tier member of the entire animal kingdom. He continues to excel at all of his basic commands. He also loves to take walks, whether it be in the building or out in the yard where they go during the morning exercise run. He is a very obedient dog on his leash and he loves to play with his toys and a large red ball that's in the training room at the dorm. His ears are always quick to perk up whenever he hears the squeak of his toys. Sam will make such a great pet and a great addition to your family! His trainer said that being able to be a part of Sam's training and the Second Chance Greyhound program in general has been such a great opportunity, and his trainer hopes you love him as much as he has!

Ready To Steal Your Heart

Another productive week in the books for Sam!  They worked on the “jump” command this week.  At first, Sam was a little unsure of this jumping request.  He liked the off portion of the jump trick, but not the up portion.  As is Sam’s fashion he worked through it and is now jumping on/off with no problems!  His inmate trainer is working to keep Sam sharp on all his basic commands and plans to do a more work on the stairs.

When it comes to play time Sam has a blast running in the big yard.  If he doesn’t get to go to the big yard to run, his inmate trainer lets him play with toys till his heart is content.  Sam knows that he’s supposed to sit before he gets toys.  Toy play leads to working on the “give” command so that Sam understand he’s to release the toy upon request.

Sam’s inmate trainer says that Sam has been so much fun!  He says that not only is Sam handsome but he has a set of ears that’ll steal your heart!  His inmate trainer believes that Sam is going to make a great addition to some lucky home!

Sam's The Man

Sam knows all of his basic commands!  This week his inmate trainer worked on just the verbal commands then turned to commands with signals and Sam did great!  They’ve also been working on the “give” command.  When Sam is playing and has a toy in his mouth his inmate trainer will say “give” and Sam will slowly release the toy.  He doesn’t really think it’s fair as he had the toy first, but since his trainer asked nicely he comes around to the idea of sharing.

This week the stairs were introduced into the training routine.  At first, Sam wasn’t too sure about going up, but with a little patience he finally made it to the top!  He flew back down the stairs so his inmate trainer says they’ll be working on this a bit more until Sam becomes a little more comfortable with the idea of steps.

Sweet Boy with Sweeter Antics

Week 3 of training has been a very busy and successful week. Sam is such a smart greyhound! He had his first show and tell and he did wonderfully. He nailed all of his commands except for one, which was heel. He is definitely getting better at it though. Practice makes perfect! With Sam knowing his commands so well, they will start next week just using hand signals and then just verbal.

Sam loves to play! He usually likes to play with his one favorite toy, but his trainer introduced him to a jolly ball. This is a pink ball about the size of a soccer ball. He loves to push it around with his nose. Also, he puts his paws on top of the ball and rolls it around kind of like a soccer player moving the ball across the field. It's very cute! He still enjoys running and he is very fast, and everyone loves to see him tear it up on the big yard.

Another thing that his trainer found out about Sam this week is that he likes to be covered up at night. At around 9:30, he tells Sam 'night night.' Then Sam gets in the back of his kennel and goes to bed. Then his trainer covers him up with just his head peeking out of the blanket. Too cute! Wouldn't you like to lay around with Sam covered up with your favorite blanket?

Smart, Gentle Goofball

Sam has finished week 2 of his training. He is such a smart Greyhound and catches on really quickly. This week he worked on sit, down, heel, stay, leave it, and wait. Soon he will move on to working on jump and off. At the end of week 2, Sam was sitting and downing by himself. What a smart boy!

After training, Sam gets to play in the training room with his favorite toys. His favorite toy is a turtle that squeaks in about 5 different areas on the turtle's back, and his other favorite toy is a pig that oinks. Anything that makes noise, Sam loves. Also, Sam gets to relax on a bed in the day room while watching football with his trainer. Another great way for Sam and his human to bond. Would you like to watch football with Sam? Because he would love to watch it with you!

Sam is such an excellent greyhound. He is very calm and quiet. He loves to get kibble and so far he likes all the treats that he has been given. He sleeps well at night, and his trainer must say that Sam gets a lot of compliments on his ears. His ears stand tall and straight up and turn in when something gets his attention - which happens frequently! If you are looking for a very nice Greyhound, we're telling you, Sam is the one. Don't miss out!

Lookin' for Love

When Sam first arrived here, Sam was like, where am I at? Who is this strong strange person holding me on a leash? Why is he keeping me by his side? Sam pulled all the way to the dorm, got cleaned up, got his nails clipped, had his ears cleaned, got checked for bugs and then fed. After all that, he walked around the dorm to get a feeling of where he's at. It was really busy, so he twisted and turned to every little noise. He has long ears that stand straight up when something gets his attention. So cute!

So far Sam is working on bed, wait, heel, and here. Next week they will move on to the rest of the commands. Sam is very shy, but after a few weeks he should come around. He still runs very well and he loves playing with squeaky toys. He is such a great dog and has not whined or barked since he has been here. He's very calm and relaxed and seems to get along well with the other dogs and all the people around him. His trainer thinks that Sam will make a great friend - or should we say best friend - in any household. Could it be yours?
