Ready To Head Home

It’s hard to believe that week 10 has arrived and it’s time to say Goodbye.  Comet’s inmate trainer says that time has flown by.  He says that Comet is super fun and well mannered.  He works hard to please his human and catches onto things quickly.  He knows all of his commands as well as a few extras.  If you say “bang” he’ll fall over like he’s being shot.  It’s really a sight to see!

Comet’s inmate trainer says that he is thankful for the time he’s had with this sweet boy and wishes him and his new family the absolute best!

Coming To A Couch Near You

It’s official. Swap week has come and gone in the Second Chance Greyhound’s dorm. This week our special guest was Comet. A handsome brindle boy. At first glance, Comet doesn’t seem very affectionate, but once you start scratching his ears and neck, he just melts. This boy is one smart cookie. He did wonderful taking commands from someone other than his primary trainer.

Comet has the ability to be a great racer, but he prefers to be in the middle of the pack of runners just socializing. Every once in a while, Comet takes the lead, only to slow down when he realizes he is running alone.

Come hung out next to his trainer’s feet during the super bowl. He must be a Chiefs fan because he went to sleep really early, just like they did on the field. LOL I hope you are ready for a sweet dog with beautiful brown eyes, because Comet is coming your way soon.

Easy To Love

Comet’s inmate trainer says that you’ll love this sweet boy!  He’s smart and easy to love.  He picks up fast on everything and has made training a joy.  His trainer says it pretty cool to see a Greyhound think about a request.  Comet listens to what you have to say. Processes it, then makes his move.

Comet loves to run and play in the big yard with his pals.  His inmate trainer says that Comet’s wonderful personality will win his new forever family over quickly.

"Bang"

Comet has officially learned all his basic commands and is now beginning to learn extras. So far, he is working on “bang”(play dead) and roll over. When his trainer gives Comet the “bang” command, he takes a few staggered steps, goes into the down position, then flops over onto his side dramatically, dead as a door nail. LOL His trainer is having to work out one little kink. Afterwards, Comet pops his head up and looks at his trainer like, “Alright, I did it… Now where’s my treat?” Comet is one silly greyhound.

Fantastic Greyhound

Y’all Comet is really a fantastic greyhound! His inmate trainer also says that Comet is a fast learner.  When you give him a command you can actually see him thinking it through.  When he’s taken out for a walk, he is as close to perfect as his trainer can ask for.  When it’s potty time he heads out and takes care of business right away.  Comet can be a little picky about his food bowl, but they’re working to show him it’s no big deal to share the space around the bowl.  He’s been doing really well this week!

Comet’s inmate trainer says that he believes that Comet’s new family will find him easy to love.  Comet’s trainer says that he’s going to continue enjoying every day with this amazing pup until it’s time to send him home.

What Are These Squeaky Things?

Comet has started to show a little interest in toys this week!  His inmate trainer says that he’s still trying to figure out their squeaky natures.  He’ll play for 5-10 mins then feel the need to relax.  His inmate trainer says that it’s been great fun to watch Comet embrace something new.  In previous training sessions, Comet wouldn’t even consider picking up a toy!

Comet is also showing great improvement when greeting strangers.  He’s even doing really well responding to commands given by unfamiliar trainers.  He seems to be up to working for anyone willing to show him some attention or provide a treat!

Gold Stars Earned

Comet’s inmate trainer says that Comet has earned gold stars on many of his commands including: kennel, wait, here, stay, bed, jump, and hurry.  He says that he’s especially impressed and grateful for his ability to “hurry” when they go outside for a potty break.  It’s cold outside, so January is not the time of year you want to be hanging out in the cold while a pup tries to find the perfect spot to go to the bathroom.  Comet seems to understand that “hurry” means find a spot and take care of business.  His inmate trainer says that he believes Comet dislikes the cold as much as he does.

This week they’ve worked on sit.  At first Comet would assume the position for all of 3 seconds before melting into the floor in a big puddle of lazy greyhound relaxation.  As of right now he’ll hold the sit for about 10 seconds, all of which is spent staring at his trainer like, “Hurry up, say release I wanna lay down!”  On the other hand Comet can hold the bed position for an hour with no problem.

Social Butterfly

Comet has been a social butterfly this week. He never meets a stranger and is always more then happy to be petted by other inmates and especially the staff. Around males, Comet is calm, usually inching his body close and laying his head in their lap. He loves a good ear rub. Occasionally Comet becomes a bit excited around the female staff, so that’s something his trainer is working on as training progresses.

Comet is a fast learner and a master at eye contact. The other day, Comet was laying on the bed, half asleep. His trainer was talking to another trainer and said “Comet is a great dog and any family would be lucky to adopt him”. Upon hearing his name, he jerked his head up, looking right at his trainer as if to say, “I know you are talking about me. What’s up?” See. He already knows his name. Comet is making quick and steady progress.

Shooting Star

It’s been a pretty productive week with Comet. He has gotten comfortable at Jenkins. In fact, as his trainer is writing this, he is lying on his side with his head on his pillow, taking a nap before they begin their last training session of the day. it’s only week two and Comet already understands kennel, bed, leave it, stay, heel, wait and hurry. There’s still a lot of improvement needed, but he’s well on his way. He’s a smart hound, so expect great things from Comet. He’s what you might call a shooting star.

Curious Comet

It’s week 1 here at SCG Academy, where this trainer was given the opportunity to work with retired racer “Mega Horsepower”, now named Comet. Comet is a beautiful brindle hound with a mild temperament and a curious, loving personality. He’s a real sweetheart!. They had no difficulty bathing or grooming Comet and he settled in quickly. From the first training session, his trainer could tell that he is very treat motivated and catches on fast. Leash walking has been an area of steady progress, especially after Comet had a chance to satisfy his curiosity by sniffing everything in his new environment.

All in all, it’s been a great week. The SCG trainers are eager to get back to work and they really appreciate all the foster families’ time and effort to help jumpstart this session. Happy Holidays!
