Graduation is Near!

Frankie did very well this past week.   He's still having a few problems doing commands for different people and he's acting unsure of the floors again and for some reason he's having trouble going into his kennel.  This is post swap week so we have a bit more time to work on fine tuning all of this before graduation on the 8th.  He did pass his test for graduation so I am proud of Frankie for that.

I know he will be a great pet for some lucky family.  Good luck Frankie!!

Lazy With A Bit Of Goofy

It’s time for swap week!  This week the inmate trainers swapped dogs to work on commands and for the dogs to have time with new handlers in a new environment.

Frankie’s temporary inmate trainer says that Frankie is truly enjoyable dog.  He says that Frankie is a lazy dog with a goofy playful side.  When Frankie decides to play he will play with toys, humans and other goofy dogs.

Frankie did not have any problems spending time away from his primary trainer.  He didn’t really want to perform his commands this week.  His temporary trainer got Frankie to perform by getting him in a playful mood with a treat or lure.  While on the leash he wanted to lead the way and needed correction.  He didn’t really want to spend time in his kennel, but agreed to it for a treat.  He would try to dart out when the door was open, but his temporary trainer made him wait until allowed out.

His temporary trainer says that Frankie is a great dog!  He will need time to bond with his new family and for someone to be the pack leader to keep him following through on his commands.

Graduation Is Coming

This week Frankie decided he wasn’t too interested in performing his commands.  His inmate trainer doesn’t know if something spooked him in the room or if he’s just shy around a lot of people.  He plans to work with Frankie to try to determine the cause.  His inmate trainer believes that a new home outside of the prison environment is going to be great for Frankie.

Frankie knows all of his commands with verbal only cues and many with hand signal only requests.  Her responds well to his extra commands, leave it and bow.  His inmate trainer says that he has no doubt that Frankie’s new family will fall quickly for this sweet boy.

Shy And Sweet

Frankie’s secondary inmate trainer has been working with him on commands.  So far Frankie has been a little stubborn about doing his commands with someone new.  Frankie can be particular about who he works for.  He will do anything his primary handler requests of him.  His primary handler says that it takes time, trust, and a solid bond for Frankie to feel comfortable about performing.

Frankie Is a laid back shy kinda guy which can make training a little more difficult.  His primary trainer says that it’s important to be patient and not to rush Frankie.  When rushed he will just shut down.  His trainer says that Frankie’s new family will go through the process of bonding, but shouldn’t have any problems once Frankie is comfortable.  He says this is one journey that’s worth taking with because Frankie is a wonderful boy!

On the Home Stretch . . .

There are only a few more weeks until graduation!  Frankie's inmate handler states Frankie is doing very well in his training.  He is walking much better on the floors now.  Just a few more weeks and they will be a distant memory.  He will have conquered them!

Frankie is doing great with his commands, most especially if there is a treat involved.  If not, at this time, it isn't likely he'll do them.  He can be a bit stubborn and when he's done, he will let you know he is ready to just chill.

He has become alot more playful during the last week, both inside the pod and outside on the big yard.  He'll get into a down position and will go around and around in the same position and same spot, all really fast!!  Then he'll just take off running, then he'll stop and look back at you as if to say, "you want me to go again"?  It's really cute and whomever is getting this wonderful Greyhound is going to really love him and his personality.  He's the best!!

Laid Back And Happy

This week has been a good week for Frankie and his inmate trainer!  Frankie is doing better with shiny floors, but still having issues with the long hallway leading to the yard.  Here’s the kicker, he doesn’t having a problem coming back in on that same hallway it’s just going out!  His inmate trainer will continue to work with Frankie so that he feels more confident coming and going!

Frankie sat on command for the first time this week!  His inmate trainer said this really made his day to see Frankie doing commands on his own without assistance!  He says that seeing these dogs succeed is a great feeling and that it’s nice to feel like he’s done something right and good.

His inmate trainer says that Frankie is a great dog who’s going to be a wonderful pet.  He’s laid back, but comes alive during playtime in the yard.

Training For Retirement

Frankie has had a bit of a shiny floor set back this week.  His inmate trainer is not sure why he’s unsure of the floors after making so much great progress over the past three weeks.  Not to worry though that’s what training is all about; helping the dogs become confident.

Frankie will sit on his own outside, but requires assistance inside on the shiny floors.  He is performing bow and down with a nice yummy treat lure.  He knows hurry, let’s go, kennel, release, wait, and bed with verbal only commands.  He responds to wait and down with verbal only or hand signal only commands!  He’s a little slow responding to heel and here, but his inmate trainer knows he’ll have these figured out in no time.

Tail Wagging Happiness

Hello there, my name is Frankie and I’m doing this neat thing called training!  You see I get treats for doing what my inmate trainer requests of me!  Pretty awesome if you ask me!

This week my inmate trainer took me into the training room and I just couldn’t help but wag my tail with happiness and bounce around.  He said that it was so great to see me become playful that he had to jump in and play with me!  I’ll admit I’ve been a little shy since coming here, but you gotta understand it’s so different!  It’s loud and a little daunting, but thanks to my inmate trainer I’m feeling much better about things!

I’ve been getting treats for hurry, let’s go, kennel, release, wait, and bed!  My inmate trainer says I need to work on my response time for heel, here, sit, down, and stay.  I’m beginning to understand what he’s asking so I’ll have these cleaned up in no time.  Besides, I like being paid in treats!

Gaining Confidence

Frankie has had a very productive week!  When he first arrived he was very scared of the shiny floors, but now he’s walking around without a problem!  He’s really shy around people and would rather be out and about rather than inside his kennel.  His inmate trainer has been working with him to help him feel more comfortable while he’s in his kennel.

Once Frankie’s confidence grows his training will progress more quickly, but right now his inmate trainer wants him to feel safe and confident.  His trainer knows that once trust is established training will be easier for Frankie.

Training Skills

Frankie arrived at the prison weighing in at 54 lbs which is a little under his race weight of 61 lbs. For the first 72 hours Frankie and his inmate trainer will spend time bonding and getting to know each other.  Most importantly, Frankie will be learning to respond to his name!  They’ll slowly move into training with a few basic commands; wait, hurry, heel, kennel and bed.

Frankie is a bit shy and unsure of this new environment.  He was not a fan of the shiny floors, but is doing much better – no more ice skating or wall hugging! Training starts soon and his inmate trainer believes that Frankie is going to catch on pretty quick!
