New Home - Forever Family

It's Judy's last week at Jenkins before she goes to her new home and her trainer couldn't be more proud.  When she first came to the prison, she was a wild child, pulling on the leash every chance she got.  Now she has channeled her excitement into good behavior.  Sometimes when walking on the leash, Judy still gets excited and pulls, but if you stop walking, she will automatically stop and back up to be by your side.  If you step backward, she will "heel"  What a great girl.  She learned "heel" not a moment too soon. LOL.

Judy passed her final testing with flying colors and is ready for the next step...forever home and family.  Judy is very a loving and affectionate dog and her trainer will cherish these past 10 weeks that he got to spend with her.  She is a happy-go-lucky gal!  Enjoy Judy!!!

Perfect Addition

During this session "swap week", Judy's trainers said they were lucky to work with her.  They said Judy is such a sweet Greyhound that loves to be around people and is always waiting for a good scratch behind the ears.  She has shown no signs of separation anxiety, so the transition into her forever home should be smooth sailing.  Not only that, she has shown no food or toy possession issues and she is easy going around her fellow Greyhounds.  This makes sweet Judy a perfect addition for any family!

Judy is curious and interested in the world around her.  She is always ready to accompany her human on the next adventure.  Are you ready?

Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice

Another week has gone by and Judy is doing great! She's a lot more focused and control than when she first got here. She's still a little scatterbrained at times, but that's because she's so high energy.

Judy still sometime shows her stubborn side when it comes to waiting at a threshold. But, properly motivated, she straightens up. And her trainer has turned healing into a game so the command has become fun for her. Judy is a sweet, loving, playful, affectionate dog. She's got a lot of love to give and her trainer wouldn't trade her for any of the other dogs this session. She's a shining light in his day.

On Schedule

Judy's training is progressing on schedule.  She knows all of her commands well;  all verbally and most with hand signals.  She's a curious girl and can get distracted while "heeling".  A gentle tug on the leash reminds her of what she is supposed to do.  Most times Judy "heels" perfectly.

Judy has come a long way, since first arriving at the prison.  She is much calmer, shows more self control and pays more attention.   She is such a sweet, affectionate and playful girl and she is going to welcome her new forever family with open paws!

Curious Cutie

Well, the time has come when all the dogs go through some characteristic mood changes and Judy is no exception. She knows all her commands but in an effort to assert dominance, she's shown some hesitation in completing "heel." Of course, some of this is just her excitement, and she's also easily distracted - so many shiny, loud, bright things! And she is curious about EVERYTHING!

Judy has also shown some signs of separation anxiety, which is very common for Greyhounds that come off the track since they are used to being around other hounds 24/7. So she and her inmate trainer are working to eradicate that anxiety. She will need a kennel cover in her new forever home. When you leave the house, it'll create a sort of cave-like environment that helps her feel protected. Just give her a Kong and a Nylabone.

She is a loving, affectionate dog and will make a great companion. Her sociability and personality make her prone to separation anxiety to begin with, so her trainer is just working with her every day to help her relax and feel at home in her kennel.

First Time's a Charm!

It's a new year and Judy has made a breakthrough - she's doing ALL of her commands on the first try except for "down", which is one of the trickiest in the book. And the edge has worn off of her excitement. She rarely pulls on her leash and if you stop walking she either backs up or automatically "heels." Of course she does sometimes fall back into her old ways and indulges in excitement and toy obsession, but who doesn't? If you assert yourself and work with her, she gets right back in line.

Judy also learned how to play "fetch" which she really enjoys! Make sure you cherish that, because not every greyhound gives such a hoot about fetching.

Judy's trainer says that he thinks it would be a good idea to have a kennel cover for her since it helps calm her down by making her feel like she's in her own little space, like a cave.

Until next week . . .

Lots of Love

Another week with Judy has gone by and this girl is doing great. She's picked up on her commands already, so now it's time for fine-tuning them so that she responds to them on the first try. She's good at waiting at thresholds and clearly marked boundaries, but "staying" is somewhat of a challenge to our girl. She'll do it after a couple of tries.

Lately Judy and her inmate trainer have been working on leash walking and relaxing on the bed. And also working on not taking a toy from your hand! She only gets it after sitting for it first. She loves to play and is learning that play time is a reward. Miss Judy is a sweetie with a big heart full of love for people.

Cuteness Overload

Judy is progressing nicely during the holidays.  She knows Santa is coming and she wants to be on her best behavior.  She has been dreaming of squeaky toys to play fetch with and hopes Santa remembers what a good girl she has been this year.  Instead of visions of sugar-plums dancing in her head on Christmas Eve it will be squeaky toys!

Judy's cuteness and sweet demeanor has made her a favorite in the dorm.  How could you resist her cute face and those ears are to die for!  She loves to trot up to anyone and everyone for attention and ear scratches.  She's one affectionate greyhound!

Sometimes Judy's excitement gets the better of her and she will jump up on you, when she greets you.  Her inmate trainer is working with her on this and she is getting much better.

This week Judy worked mainly on leash walking.  She already knows "sit", "down", "bed", "here", "heel", "wait" and "stay".  Her trainer will work with her to fine tune these commands in the coming weeks.

Bring on the Squeak Toys

Judy's second week progressed nicely. She's got lots of energy and plenty of friendliness to match. An extraordinarily sweet and affectionate girl, she loves to meet and greet people as well as other dogs. She's learning the joys of the dog bed and relaxing in the kennel. She's getting the hang of her commands - once she chills! Judy is very playful and her trainer says she would do great in a home with a family who also has a lot of energy.

One thing Judy wants her future forever family to know is that she loves squeaky toys. Her trainer would even go so far as to say she's obsessed with those squeaky little buddies!

So far, the commands she knows well are "hurry" (bathroom), "kennel" and "here." She's almost proficient in "let's go," "release" and "heel." Every Greyhound latches onto different commands right off the bat and others take a little more work.

Judy's trainer is excited to find out which commands this beautiful, sweet girl picks up on next. Tune in next time to hear all about what Judy's learning!

Bundle Of Love

Judy is a bundle of love, energy and affection.  She is a sweet, cute, gentle dog who loves to be petted and hugged.  She is incredibly smart.  She picked up on the "heel" command right away.  Her trainer is working on "wait" and walking on a leash.

She loves to play with squeaky toys and fetch.  She has no signs of food aggression and she's learning to hang out in the kennel and relax with the door open.  Her inmate trainer is looking forward to the week's ahead with Judy.  He knows she's going to be a quick catch for some new family.  Just look at those ears...  How can you resist?
