Learning New Things

Swap week!  This week the inmates exchanged dogs to work on training commands and to give the dogs a chance to adjust to a new trainer and time away from their primary handlers.

While with his temporary inmate trainer Leo learned “lap” and “Bang/Play Dead”!  He followed through with all of his basic commands really well!  He may need to work on "sit" a little more as it seems to take him a minute to comply, but he does follow through.

When Leo has to potty he will whine to let you know he has to go.  His temporary trainer says that recognizing his request will save on potty accidents.

In just one short week Leo found his way into his in temporary trainer’s heart.  His temporary trainer says that Leo’s new family will not have any problems falling in love with this great dog!

Loving And Laid Back

Now that Leo knows all of his commands their activities consist of playing and relaxing!  His inmate trainer says that Leo is a loving laid back dog who’s sure to make his new forever family very happy.  Taking care of Leo has taught his inmate trainer patience and responsibility.  He’s really enjoying spending time with this wonderful dog and is proud to report that Leo knows all of his commands with verbal only cues and many with hand signal only cues.

Leo has learned the “peek-a-boo” command.  He will stand behind you, you bend down showing a treat in your hand saying “peek-a-boo” and he will stick his head between your legs and look up at you!

Mr. Curious

Leo loves people and other dogs!  His inmate trainer says that everyone loves Leo, well until he clears out the room with a bit of gas.

Leo is doing well with all of his basic commands!  He is not quite comfortable with jump yet, but his inmate trainer knows he’ll have this conquered in no time.  Leo likes to be in charge and prefers to be at the head of the potty line when going outside.  He is a curious guy who loves to investigate everything!

His inmate trainer says that this loveble guy is sure to be a hit with his new family!

What a Ham!

Leo has been challenging his inmate trainer lately with the "sit" command.  He will do it for breakfast and for dinner but during regular training sessions, he refuses.  Not every time, so his inmate trainer is working to determine the "trigger" to his disobedience.  He may just be distracted or overworked.

So, his inmate handler gave Leo a very deserved break in training this week.

His list of extra commands include "watch me", "kiss", "paws up", "shake", and "peek a boo"!  He's quite a ham!!

Tail Wagging Happiness

Leo is staring to enjoy playing with toys!  He really likes his toy rabbit.  His inmate trainer says that Leo is a happy dog always wagging his tail and excited to start a new day.  He loves being around people and receiving attention!  He inmate trainer says that he has really enjoyed watching Leo grow and learn.  He’s a smart dog who knows all of his commands very well; although he can be a bit stubborn at times.  His trainer says that Leo performs his commands like a pro until the ladies from SCG show up then poor Leo just can’t concentrate on the work at hand.  He sees new people and can’t wait to receive attention.

His inmate trainer says that Leo has taught him responsibility, patience, love, and tolerance.  He says that this journey with Leo has been amazing and he's looking forward to the days ahead.

Paying Attention

Leo is a very happy dog.  He knows all of his commands so his inmate trainer is working on sharpening Leo’s responses.  Leo will perform the down and stay commands very well while his sit and stay commands need just a bit more work.  Leo is a little unsteady in the sitting position for a long period of time.  It’s not unusual for Greyhounds to find sitting a little more difficult due to their posterior muscles!

Leo and his inmate trainer have been working on the kennel command from a far distance.  They’ve also been working on the attention game.  His inmate trainer laughingly says that Leo is so good at paying attention now that his staring is kinda creepy!  The good news is that it’s working and Leo is listening better now.

Leo is overcoming the shiny floor walk.  He still hesitates in the hallway, but is getting better.  His inmate trainer is working to build Leo’s confidence so that he’ll walk out brave and comfortable!

Treats, Treats, Training & Treats

Around here I’m called Leo.  I’ve gotten use to this new handle and kinda like it.  So I’ve been in this new place for what I believe to be three weeks now.  It’s not so bad.  You know what the best part is?  TREATS!  Especially the ones my inmate trainer calls turkey heart treats.  I think I’ve actually fallen a little in love with them and for one bite I’d probably follow my trainer to the moon if he could work the whole gravity/oxygen thing out.

Anyway, I’ve been working on sitting and decided to sit on my own at dinner time.  I think my inmate trainer may have puffed up with pride when I pulled that move!  It makes me kinda smile a little when I imagine him being a peacock prancing round all proud… oh wait, I’m getting distracted again.  Sorry, my inmate trainer says I have a tendency to let my mind wander off.  He plans to work on…. TREATS…, excuse me random treat thoughts often interrupt my day…. AHEM… as I was saying he plans to work with me on focusing a little better.

Loves Attention

Leo is a curious guy who loves people and attention.  His inmate trainer says that he works with Leo in 10 – 15 minute sessions because he gets distracted easily.  He can be a little stubborn and would rather do his own thing, but his trainer believes that once Leo settles in and gets used to all the new things around him he’ll be able to focus on training a bit more.

So far Leo is responding to let’s go, watch me, kiss, and release really well.  He is still slow responding to hurry, kennel, wait, here, and down.  His trainer is confident that Leo will get it all figured out soon.

Spending Time Training For Retirement

Leo is adapting very well to his new environment.  His inmate trainer says that Leo loves to investigate everything.  He has no problem approaching people and seems to be a people person dog!  At first he didn’t like to go into his kennel, but has learned that being in his kennel is a good thing and doesn’t mind spending time there now!

When he first arrived Leo didn’t like walking on the shiny floors, but now walks on them with confidence!  His inmate trainer has taught him to wait before entering or leaving his kennel.  Leo has learned his name and is making great eye contact.  He waits at doorways and is doing a great job walking on the leash.  His inmate trainer says that he learns fast and loves the kibble rewards!

Leo’s inmate trainer says that he’s already in love with Leo and knows he’s going to miss him when he graduates.
