Time To Say Goodbye

Johnny’s inmate trainer says that Johnny is a fantastic dog and has been an absolute pleasure to work with.  He is confident that Johnny is going to make a great addition to any home!  He’s content to lounge around all day or run around and play with you.  He’s super easy going and adjusts well to change.

Last week Johnny started showing an interest toys and since then has been playing with them every day.  He seems to prefer balls over the other toys.  He can be a little hesitant on shiny floors, but works up the courage move forward.

Johnny’s inmate trainer has jogged around the track with Johnny and he trotted along and really enjoyed himself.  He may enjoy a bit of exercise with his new family.

Johnny’s inmate trainer hopes that Johnny will have a wonderful life with his new forever family!

Swap Week Has Arrived

Swap week has arrived and Johnny spent some time with an alternate inmate trainer.  His alternate handler said that Johnny is a very well mannered reserved boy.  He’s quiet, laid back, and knows all of his commands.  He enjoys lying around watching TV or hanging out with his human.  He’s great on the leash and will stay right by your side.

Johnny’s alternate inmate trainer says that this has been a great week and he has no doubt that Johnny is going to make some lucky family very happy!

The Chase Is On

Johnny has discovered the joy of chasing a ball.  In fact, he has fallen completely in love with it!  It’s an easy way for him to burn off energy on days he’s unable to go out in the big yard and run.  Now, he’s just got to learn not to tear the ball apart once he has it!

As far as training goes, they work to keep his commands sharp for the graduation exam.  His inmate trainer has no doubt that Johnny is going to pass with flying colors!

Taking the Jump

Hi I’m Johnny.  I’m a retired racer learning new obedience skills.  I relocated from the race track to prison and it was a pretty big change.  It has taken me a while to adjust to this new place because it’s so loud and different.  I’m much more comfortable now and don’t mind wagging my tail to show my inmate trainer that I am much happier I am these days.

So, we’ve been working on this “jump” command and it’s a doozie.  Why you ask?  Well I jump onto a shiny bench.  It can be a little slippery and I’m not too crazy about these shiny slippery floors.  Well, regardless of how I feel about them I’m doing it!  I’ve overcome my fear and I’m jumping like a pro! Thanks to my inmate trainer for helping me to accomplish this!

I enjoy working with my inmate trainer.  He’s helped me to build confidence and realize that I can do anything I set my paw to!

Laid Back With A Great Attitude!

Johnny is a very laid back boy with a great attitude.  In the six week at the prison his inmate trainer has never heard him growl at another person or dog.  He is quick to learn his commands and has adjusted to the new environment very nicely.

This week they continued working on basic commands and put a little more focus on jumping on/off the bench.  He will jump on the bench with some coaxing, but is very anxious to hop off. The benches are metal so he slips every once and awhile so that’s probably why he’s so unsure of himself.

Johnny likes routine.  His inmate trainer says that he thinks Johnny could run through the daily routine without any human guidance at all!  He says that you can tell that Johnny is an intelligent boy by just looking into his eyes and seeing the depth and understanding in them. He’s a great dog who’s going to make a great addition to some lucky home!

A Favorite

Johnny is doing very well with training this week!  He is easily one of his inmate trainer’s favorite dogs since this program began.  Despite Johnny's lack of interest in treats he hasn’t slowed down one bit with training!  In fact, it’s one of the things his inmate trainer loves about him!

Johnny seems to be having more fun lately.  With a little help from another member of the training team they play together and Johnny will get excited, start running around in circles and even bark occasionally!  He has great recall outside and his inmate trainer says that it’s a great feeling to call your Greyhound and have him drop everything and run to you.  Johnny’s trainer says that Johnny is a great dog and it’s a joy to see him so happy.

Hoping for Love

Johnny is proving himself to be such a smart dog!  This past week he picked up on so much!  He knows:  hurry, let’s go, kennel, wait, here, sit, down, and bed!  His inmate trainer says that Johnny has earned a place in his heart as well in the hearts of the other inmate trainers.

Johnny is a sweet boy who enjoys walking up to new people hoping for someone to pet him or give him a hug.  He’s coming out of his shell more and more and more every day.  This week he has been running and playing with his inmate trainer like a big puppy.  He’s laid back and doesn’t mind sharing his bed with other dogs and doesn’t always need treats when training.  His inmate trainer couldn’t be more proud of this wonderful guy and all that he has achieved in such a short time!

Job Well Done

The past week has been an eventful one for Johnny.  He has accomplished two new training feats… sit and stairs!  Johnny discovered that those scary looking stairs were not so bad after all!

Occasionally the inmate trainers come across a dog that is not very treat motivated, like Johnny. These dogs can pose their own training challenges, but this is just not the case with Johnny. Johnny aims to please.  He’s just as happy seeing the smile on his trainer’s face and receiving a nice neck rub as he is to receive a treat.  Knowing that he’s done the job well seems to make him proud.  His inmate trainer says this gives a more personal aspect to training for him, more of a sense of accomplishment and he’s thankful he gets to experience this with Johnny.

Taking Retirement Seriously

With the second week of training complete Johnny is now fully acclimated to his temporary home at the prison.  At the moment his favorite thing to do is lay out on a dog bed all settled in for a nice long nap!

Johnny is catching on quickly and he is already a pro at leash walking.  On top of that he knows: his name, let’s go, bed, and wait!  They have started working on sit which is one of the harder commands for Greyhounds to learn because of all those bum muscles!

Johnny’s inmate trainer says that he is a super sweet boy who's easy to love and will fit well into any home!

A New Life is Starting

Johnny is adjusting nicely to the new prison environment!  He seems to be a low energy, calm boy with no problems being alone in his kennel.  Nothing seemed to really shock him when he first arrived.  He’s content to lounge around satisfied to accept neck rubs from random peeps.  He hasn’t shown any interest in treats or toys yet, but this will change with time.

Johnny’s inmate trainer says that one of the things he loves is how his ears stick straight up to form a triangle when he hears an interesting noise.  His trainer can’t wait to watch Johnny’s personality emerge in the coming weeks.
