New Journey Ahead

The ten weeks Spirit’s trainer has spent with him bonding and training, will come to an end Thursday. Spirit has been a great dog. He does great on all the basic commands and even the three extras he has learned. “Speak, “Bow” and “belly-scratch”. Belly-scratch is where he will roll over on his back for you to scratch his belly. He’s a big ole baby! LOL

Spirit’s trainer said this is always a bittersweet time to go through, but he is always proud to see the dog he helped train trot to the dog hauler heading to his forever home, and then seeing his new dog arrive. He knows Spirit will do well on his next journey. Happy trails Spirit!

Just Chllin'

Its swap week time! The dogs swap inmate training teams to test them out on their command giving skills.  The dogs get a chance to see if one team treats more than other so they can go back and request a raise.  If it looks like a trainer is struggling a bit the dogs may throw them a challenge or two so they can grow and learn how to up their training game.

Spirit’s alternate inmate trainer says it was a true pleasure working with the gentle and intelligent boy.  He’s the kind of dog who just wants to lay back and relax.  He likes to watch what’s going on around him, but he doesn’t always have the need to get involved.  Spirit did great with all of his commands performing them with ease.  He wasn’t shy during Show and Tell.  His alternate inmate trainer says it was a fun week and he was thankful he got to spend it with Spirit.

Ready for a little "spin"

Well, it’s the eight week mark in this training session.  Where does time go?  Sprit’s inmate trainer says that Sprit has come such a long way since he arrived. He now knows and performs all of his basic commands as well as a few extras such as “speak,” “bow,” and “spin.” What a smartie pants!!

He says that Spirit has a great personality.  He’s an easy going guy and ready for anything! Spirit started to play with toys and romp around the yard enjoying himself to the fullest.  He believes that Spirit is going to make a great additional to his new family!  Could it be yours?

Discovering the Joys of Toys

Spirit had another good week! He continues to do well in all of his training sessions and has continued to learn a few extras, like speak and bow as well as spin, which he has almost nailed. This week he has even taken an interest in playing with toys and a tennis ball. It is great to watch him enjoy playing with a squeaky toy or chase after a tennis ball, especially since only just last week he wouldn’t have given either the time of day!

That is one of the great things about this program – watching the dogs go from being a speedy athlete to becoming the playful pet and couch potato all in one, you’ll know and love forever!

Got Spirit?

Spirit has had an awesome week! He seems to have turned into a sponge, absorbing everything his trainer teaches him. Spirit will now “speak” and “bow” in addition to his list of basic commands he already knows well. He is also learning to “spin”, which he almost has down pat as well. How much fun that will be, showing off Spirit’s talents to all of your friends. He will be sure to amaze them.

Spirit is always so eager to please. Who knows what else his trainer can teach him in the remaining weeks. Spirit is a very fun and loving greyhound and will make a great addition to any family. How about yours?

The Bee's Knees!

Spirit has reached the halfway point in his training session and has made great progress! He is a very smart and loving dog, and is becoming more playful as the session moves along. His trainer credits this to Spirit becoming more comfortable with his surroundings here as well as with his routine that they go through together. He has a pretty funny thing that he does sometimes before he takes off running on the big yard. He will spin around two or three times and then take off like a bullet!

His trainer plans to hone his basic commands in the remaining weeks and teach him a few extras. He has already shown himself to be an apt pupil so his trainer foresees no problems whatsoever. Spirit is going to make a great pet for some lucky person. If you are looking for an absolute delight, look no further - Spirit is the bee's knees!

Big Ole Ham For Belly Rubs

Spirit has learned so much this week! He will now down, stay, and here like a pro! His inmate trainer is still working on the heel command with him, but he’s coming right along.  He’s even taken an interest in toys this week!  Now at the end of his training session they have some toy play time.   So far his favorite toy is a yellow pig that oinks.  He gets really excited when he hears it making that sound.

Spirit enjoys being outside for playtime and potty breaks.  There’s so many wonderful smells and sounds! He loves to investigate everything.

You should also know that he loves to have his belly rubbed.  He’ll roll over fully expecting the humans to rub his belly and show him some attention.  His inmate trainer says that Spirit is a big ole ham who is sure to make his forever family very happy.

Spirited Boy

Week three went very well for Spirit and for his training. He seems to be more settled in to his new environment and is not as distracted by all the sights, smells and sounds as he was when he first arrived. He is still working on his “sit” command with some success, and he even sat four times during a training session! What a good boy. He is making so much progress.

As far as Spirit’s socialization skills go, he loves attention and loves to be petted! He enjoys being scratched or rubbed, too, so take your pick because he is game for any of them. If you’re in the mood to love on this sweet guy, then he is down like a clown, Charlie Brown!

Gentle and Laid Back Boy

Spirit is growing more accustomed to his new environment.  His inmate trainer has been teaching him “sit” and “heel” this week. His inmate trainer says that he believes that this will be the week that Spirit sits on his own!

Spirit will already follow through with the “bed” command and doesn’t try to bolt out of the door. He has very good kennel manners as well. He loves to be petted and to have his ears rubbed.  His inmate trainer describes him as a very gentle and laid back boy.  He believes that Spirit will make a great pet for some very lucky family!

Spirit in the Sky!

Spirit is adapting so well to his new surroundings. So far, he seems to be a very fast learner! This week he has been working on wait, hurry, let's go, kennel and bed. He does very well with wait and kennel.

His leash walking is also pretty good considering it's just week one! He stays right by his trainer's side for the most part. He has also worked quite a bit on heel. He is so laid-back and has wonderful kennel manners. He interacts well with the other dogs when it's bathroom break time, as well as when he is wandering around the dorm. He gets along great with every human he meets here at Second Chance Academy for Excellent Hounds. His trainer is looking forward to the coming weeks with this handsome guy, so check back soon for more updates about Spirit!
