The Thinking Man

Davis has been with us for about two weeks now.  We fondly call him the Thinking Man.  He's a little slow to warm up as he decides about trusting, but once he places his trust in you he's in.  He was a little slower warming up to my husband and seems a little more drawn to females.  It's been wonderful to see his loving nature flourish!  He's doing great with our two Greyhounds sharing toys (even treat dispensing toys) and space.

He took a trip to Petsmart and was intrigued with everything!  He was a little nervous, but explored and shopped for toys and beds. He caught the eye of many humans all of which wanted to greet him.  He handled each greeting well only pulling back from those who went all in too fast.  He doesn't snap just removes himself from the situation.

As his trust in us has grown his goofiness comes out as well.  As part of his play he will lovely nit your arm or hand.  It's his way of showing affection and acceptance.  He's also noticed that our two Greyhounds are allowed on furniture and is starting to wonder about what it feels like to lay on the couch.  We've explained that he's not allowed as his forever family may not want to share their couch.  He seems to understand and goes on about his business with no problems.

He's not a huge fan of loud noises, but recovers well from them.  He's going to make a fantastic pet for some lucky family.  Giving him time to adjust, reassurance, and a little baby talk goes a long way.  This guy will steal you're heart there's no way around it!

What A Wonderful Boy!

Davis here, just wanted to give everyone an update.  I've been hanging out with my foster family for Christmas. I have a foster brother and sister that I share my toys with.  I'm a thinking kinda guy so it takes a bit to warm up.  I'm learning all about this love business and starting to really enjoy it! I wasn't sure at first and would pull away some, but now I want the attention.  I'm a little slower to warm up to men than women - I just think the girls are way cooler.  I'm an awesome car rider and I've been doing really well on the leash.  My foster mom says that I listen to correction really well.  I love toys, ear scratches, food, and treats!  I hope I find one of those forever homes soon.  My foster mom says that I could have a family of my very own!

Silly Boy

Davis here, just wanted to update everyone and let them know that I am just a big silly goof ball who loves to be the center of attention. I love following my foster mom around and smelling everything she does so that I know whats up. I figured out how to push open the pantry door and I like to lay in front of the food bag because four cups of food a day isnt enough. I love cuddles and between the eye scratches. I like going on walks with my foster brother sonic and think its fun to share his crate even though I have my own. Maybe ill get adopted before christmas so I can get a slumber ball like sonic has

Second night in new foster

Second night in my new foster home! So far so good, I've gotten lots of "good boy Davis" as I've walked up and down the stairs with no problem. I've also wowed my foster mom with my manners and cute snoot. I like when she gives me peanut butter biscuits for giving kisses. I also like the stuffy I cuddle with at night. I do well in my crate and get along with sonic the other grey!  Hopefully my cuddle skills will help me find a furever home

Fun And Entertaining

Well, here we are at the final stages of the training session, and Davis' trainer couldn't be happier with his progress.  He recently had his final exam with the ladies from Second Chance Greyhounds and he passed!  He knows all of his basic commands with a verbal cue and also hand signals.

Davis loves playing fetch with squeaky toys and playing tug-of-war with the rope ones.  He's a fun and sweet boy who will be sure to endear himself to your family and entertain.

Well Behaved Gentleman

Well, it's swap week!  This is where the trainers swap Greyhounds for a week.  The swap helps the inmates test the dogs for separation anxiety and it allows them to see how well the dogs take commands from other people.

This week one of the inmate trainers received the gentle giant, called Davis.  He said Davis is such a well behaved gentleman and he does all of his commands on the first or second try.  He gets along very well with the other Greyhounds and other people.

Playtime is a sight to see with Davis. He will toss the toys up in the air and shake them like he's trying to shake the stuffing right out of them.  He was very well behaved during each play time and when it was over he calms down easily.

Davis will make a great addition to any family with his great behavior, playful energy and his love for attention.  His alternate trainer knows he'll make his family at his forever home very happy.

Improving By Leaps And Bounds

Davis has shown so much progress in the last week.  He was tested the other day on his basic commands and he did leaps and bounds better than what he had done the previous Saturdays.  He was still a little anxious, but there was marked improvement.  Awesome job Davis!  His trainer is so proud of how far he has come!

Davis gets excited when he's on a leash,  but his trainer is rewarding him for his good behavior, when he slows down and doesn't pull.  He keeps improving every day.  He is also venturing out and relaxing on the dog beds out in the pod.  Everything is so different here than how it was at the track.  He takes time to get comfortable with changes and his new surroundings, so please be patient with this sweet boy.

Davis remains sweet and affectionate.  He is an easy dog to love.  Davis' new family will be so happy when he walks into their lives.

Labor Of Love

Training is going well for Davis.  He knows his commands.  Now his trainer is perfecting and fine tuning them.  Davis is even doing them without treats, which is a labor of love.

This week was "show and tell".  Davis did all of his commands without a flaw, but would freeze when an unfamiliar face would come into the room.   After some coaxing, he would follow through with the commands.   Great job!

Davis is doing great with leaving treats alone on a counter.  He will sniff the treats, but didn't take them.  The inmates have been working with counter-surfing since day one with the greyhounds, so there should be no problems with counter-surfing out of this boy.

Davis is a sweet and loving greyhound that will be an added bonus to any family wanting to adopt a loyal companion.  Take a look at Davis...

Making His Trainer Proud

Davis is a sweet boy who loves to play and receive attention.  His inmate trainer says Davis seems to be a little skittish when being hugged around the head. He’s doing great with his commands! He’s a little slow responding to “release” and “heel” but his inmate trainer believes he’ll have these down pat soon enough.  He progresses everyday making his inmate trainer very proud.

Treat Motivated

Davis remains as sweet as ever, but can be challenging at times.   He is also a very gentle Greyhound and is HIGHLY motivated by food and treats.  His inmate trainer says he breaking ground with Davis, and once he realizes what's expected of him, he will start doing his commands on cue.

Davis learns his commands quickly and is very intelligent.  He knows "hurry", "let's go", "kennel", "release", "wait", "heel", "here", "sit", "down", "stay", "bed" and "jump".  Stay tuned for new updates next week...

Cute And Affectionate

Davis is going strong.  He's learning quickly, but still retains that bit of independence and spunk that keeps things interesting.  He's finally starting to learn to hang out on the dog bed and simply relax.  Davis is very treat motivated, so it makes training easy. He knows "hurry", "let's go", "wait", "heel", "here", "sit" and "stay well, but needs improvement on "kennel", "release", "down", "bed" and "jump".  He's a smart guy so he'll have them figured out in no time.

Davis loves squeaky toys and fetching, but when left in his possession too long, he likes to chew on them. His inmate trainer is working on that with him.  He's getting much better at not pulling on the leash.  No worries.  There's plenty of time to work on this.

Davis remains as sweet, cute and affectionate as ever.  He's waiting until the day (Dec.1) to show you just how cute he can be!

All Around Greyt Greyhound

Davis is a source of constant entertainment and spiritual nourishment.  He has a lovable and affectionate demeanor.  You can almost hypnotize him just by petting him behind his ears, on his muzzle or on the bridge of his nose.  He is in heaven.

He is learning to play with toys and the other greyhounds, but loses interest pretty quickly. He's a quick learner when it comes to his basic commands, but can be stubborn sometimes and likes to do things in his own time.  His inmate trainer is working on a healthy combination of kibble and treats to keep him motivated during training.  He knows "let's go", "kennel", "heel", "here", "sit", and "down" well, but needs more work on "hurry", "release", "wait", "stay", "bed", and "jump.  No worries.  He will have them all figured out in no time.

This week Davis conquered the stairs!  He acted like he's been doing stairs all his life. His inmate trainer is so proud of him.  If you are looking for an all-around greyt greyhound, look no further.  Davis is your boy!

Sweet And Loving Boy

There are so many things to say about Davis, that his inmate trainer doesn't know where to start.  First off he says Davis is a very sweet boy, loving and affectionate.  He LOVES  being petted on his muzzle or the bridge of his nose.  It is pure joy for him.

He loves going out on the big yard to run.  Davis starts out really fast... so you think, and then he really opens up to lightning speed.  This past week he hurdled over another greyhound out in the yard.  It surprised his inmate trainer and the other inmates.  Who knows.  Maybe dog agility training is in his future...

Davis is also very smart and picks up on what his trainer is teaching him quickly.  He does have a little  stage fright and won't do some of his commands in front of the group.  He can also be a little stubborn, but his trainer is working through this with him.

Davis can be very lazy at times.  Once he's in his kennel he likes to stay there and his trainer has to beg him to come out.  He can't refuse his favorite treat.

His inmate trainer says Davis is a GREAT and loving dog and he is really enjoying working with this fun boy.  He's excited to see what he will do next.

Expecting Great Things From Davis

Davis arrived at the prison a happy greyhound.  He was a little nervous in his new environment and didn't know what to think about it all. So many new sights, sounds and smells.   He is a sweet dog and a quick learner.  He has already learned "wait" and is picking up on "let's go".  He is doing much better not pulling on the leash and his trainer knows he will figure that all out in no time.

He has shown no aggression towards food and does very well "waiting" for it.  Davis was a little apprehensive about entering his kennel, but with a few treats and repetition, he's starting to warm up to the idea.  He shows some interest in toys and playtime, but he's more interested in the "squeak" in the squeaky toy.

Davis' inmate trainer expects great things from this cute boy.  Check back next week!
