I'm Adopted!

Hi Humans!  Rory here to tell you that I’ve had a great time in this training gig.  It’s been kinda like a spa.  I learned how to teach humans to give me more treats and I look pretty cool doing the things they ask of me.  I get along well with the other greyhounds and my inmate trainer said I’m a chilled out guy.

These days I’m all about relaxing, eating, and playing from time to time.  I hear that I’m going to a forever home.  My inmate trainer says I’m going to get a family!  I’ve been day dreaming about soft beds, and treats!

Rory's Rocking And Rolling

This week was swap week. The trainers do swap week to test the hounds to see how they do taking commands from someone different and checking for separation anxiety. Rory did great with his swap week trainer. He responded to his swap week trainer like they have been working together the whole session. Rory knows all the basic commands and is a great leash walker. If you are looking for an all around beautiful hound, Rory’s the one for you!

Handsome Hound

Rory’s secondary trainer said things are going as planned with this handsome hound. He said it’s been a blast getting to spend time with him and wok on his training. Rory knows all his basic commands. All with verbal cues and some with both verbal and hand signals. He loves to pet and love on Rory when they aren’t training. He said Rory is so soft, especially around the neck. You’ll see what he means when you meet him.

Swap week is next week. Rory will be with another team in order to prepare him for the big transition to his forever home. It’s like a trial run. This way they can see what they need to work on next week before graduation. His trainers said this session has flown by and are going to hate to say goodbye to Rory.

Mr. Smarty Pants

Rory finally learned his final basic command the week; down. His trainer delayed teaching Rory this, until he knew all the other ones very well. He assumed his lazy bones would learn this command quickly and like it maybe too much. Sure enough, smarty-pants Rory learned it in one training session and loves this command. He loves it so much that he will do it randomly and voluntarily. Rory is now a “down”ing machine!

Rory’s trainer has been having other people work with him to see how he responds to different personality types and body languages. As you might expect, easy going Rory takes well to anyone and is happy to run through his commands with them, especially if there’s a yummy treat involved.

Favorite Boy

Rory’s inmate trainer says that Rory is one of his favorite greyhounds he’s ever trained.  He says that he’s been training with the program for 5 years and so far Rory has been the sweetest, most gentle, and easiest to work with.  He’s laid-back like a California surfer but with an Ivey league brain.

Rory’s inmate trainer says that he believes Rory is going to make an amazing addition to a very lucky family!

Eager To Please

Rory had a lot of fun this week. He socialized a bunch and lounged around and watch movies. He continued to learn of course. Rory is always happy to meet and greet new people and everyone comments on how super soft his fur is. It’s no surprise that his love of laying around lands itself well to couch potato activities. He will sprawl out on a bed with no cares in the world. The challenge is after a couple of hours he’s glued to the bed. After a little persuasion Rory is up and moving again and back to his eager-to-please, happy-to-learn self.

We are half way through the training session and his trainers can already tell how much Rory will be missed.

Gentle Giant

Rory has had another great week. It used to be hard to get him up and out of his kennel, but now he would rather stay out of it. He’s almost always excited to come out and “work” as he knows this means treats. He loves to be out so he can lounge around on a big bed and stretch his long legs and snooze. too it also means treats from people passing by, which he’s a big fan of.

Everyone loves Rory. He’s the biggest greyhound of the group and could be called a gentle giant. He is so calm, easy going and adores a good neck scratch, which people are happy to oblige .

Rory’s interest in running around and playing with toys is growing. Of course, he will give up either in the blink of an eye, if it means a treat!

Food Is A Good Motivator

What a fun week it’s been with Rory! A lot more of his personality is starting to come out. His love of sleeping and eating are still at the top of his list. Food is a good motivator, as he is always happy to work to get some. Rory is starting to come around to earlier training sessions (before noon), as he now knows there’s rewards to be earned. For the most part, he’s been popping up to come out and “work” when his trainer gets him out of his kennel. His trainer is working with him to wait for the “release” command before coming out of his kennel.

As Rory’s enthusiasm for learning grows, he continues to show his trainers that he’s quite the smart pup. He has caught on quite quickly to some of the commands he has been introduced to. He did enjoy a quick sprint on the big yard with another greyhound right beside him. Check back next week to see what other commands he has learned.

Marathon Napper

Rory has shown some serious progress during his second week of training at Jenkins. This is actually a little surprising considering his extreme desire to nap and his lack of enthusiasm for anything other than food. I was warned about Rory being a “marathon napper”, but his trainer didn’t expect to have to drag him out of bed. LOL. They have started to understand that Rory isn’t a morning hound. He has zero desire to leave the kennel before 2 pm, especially to work. He is taking retirement very serious.

When his trainers finally get Rory going, he is quite the learner. He catches on to behaviors in small bouts of training and he seems to know how to get extra treats by playing dumb. LOL His trainers think they are in for a great deal of fun with Rory….. or maybe some serious naps!

O YA. He's A Handsome Boy

Rory is a big, handsome, red boy that came into the program confident and in excellent shape. Rory accepted bathing exceptionally well. It seems as though Rory may be a fairly quick learner. It only took a few quick games of "chicken” and one or two chase-downs for him to understand that he should “wait” for his trainer to “release” him before exiting the kennel. His trainer is sure he will make greyt progress with his training and looks forward to another great session with Second Chance Greyhounds.
