Perfect Houseguest

Sweet Kayla continues to do well and thrive here with my pack. She loves the company of the other Greyhounds in the home and when she is outside, she'll just run and run around the backyard. She's quite happy but we all know this isn't her forever home. Just a temporary stop along the way.

Are you her new family? She would prefer a fenced backyard and, of course, a Greyhound brother or sister. If interested, visit www.secondchancegreyhounds.org and submit an application!

What a Delight!

Little Kayla was recently returned to us to be rehomed through no fault of her own. She is the absolute cutest littlest thing who wiggles when she walks because she's so darn happy! Seriously! And she's sweet, wanting nothing more than to be loved and to have her own family to love.

Here is Kayla enjoying a good nap with not a care in the world. She's pretty much like this most of the time.

She is doing great here with my four other Greyhounds and would do best in a home with other Greyhounds or other dogs.

Will Do Commands For Water

This week was swap week at the prison pod for Second Chance Greyhounds.  Kayla is a beautiful little black Greyhound.  She is so tiny and oh so cute!!!  Kayla did all of her commands very well for her trainer for swap week.  He said she is a very laid back dog who enjoys laying around on the bed all day.  She does enjoy a quick run on the big yard.  Kayla doesn't get excited about very much, but mention water, and she will do anything for it.  It doesn't matter if it's the liquid form or a frozen ice cube.  She will run through all of her commands without you even telling her if you hold an ice cube in front of her.  She's a silly girl.

Kayla's alternate trainer has enjoyed his time with her over swap week.  In less than a week Kayla is going to some lucky family.  She is truly going to make a great addition.

Peek-a-Boo!

Good news, everyone: Kayla has mastered the peek-a-boo extra command! Here's how to do it: with Kayla standing in front of you, put your hands on your hips with your elbows out, and give the verbal command "peek-a-boo!" Kayla will then walk around behind you and poke her head between your legs (so keep em wide) and look straight up at you. It is so cute and she is such a smart girl. There's no doubt that she could learn any command someone would want to teach her.

That being said, she sure does love the relaxed lifestyle of a retired racer. It suits her personality perfectly. Even when she goes out to run in the yard, half the time she'll just run over to a shady area and lay down! She is such a sweetheart and will make a wonderful addition to our family, especially if she gets to lay in bed all day.

Sweet, Easy Going Gal

Kayla is working this week to perform all of her basic commands flawlessly. So far so good. She is also doing wonderfully with her extra commands: "water", "easy", "leave it", "peek-a-boo", "paws up" and "pray".  She has learned all of them with ease.  She is like a genius when it comes to commands.

Kayla has become very open to new people, and shows excitement when they give her commands. She is a very sweet and easy going gal. Her trainer said the only bad thing so far is that she will soon be leaving to be with her forever family. It is bittersweet and he is truly going to miss Ms. Kayla.

Ice, Ice Baby

Kayla's progress never ceases to amaze. She is such a smart, sweet, kind-hearted little gal. She's demonstrated wonderful aptitude for learning commands, and the speed at which she learns them is astounding! You might even be able to teacher her a trick or two her first week with your family. Kayla's fun fact for the week: ice cubes are her favorite treat. Of all things, ice cubes!

So far, the extra commands she knows are "paws up," "pray" and "peek-a-boo." She's great with paws up and pray. Paws-up is self-explanatory, but watching her go into "pray" is so cute. With her paws up in a chair, the pray command is you hold your hands in front of you and say pray. Then she kneels down on the chair and tucks her head!

Peek-a-boo is still being fine-tuned, but tune in the next few weeks to see where she's at!

Cutie Patootie

This week Kayla started playing with toys! She picked a soft rubber pig that squeaks, and she loves it. She has continued to open up and blossom and loves interacting with the other dogs in her class. She is great with her commands, and did I mention how sweet, smart and loving she is? I'm pretty sure I mentioned it, but just in case - she is super sweet and VERY cute! Fun fact about Kayla: her favorite past time is being lazy, and she is loving her new life as a retired racer. But I know she'll love even more her new life as your little gal!

Ice, Ice Baby

This week Kayla has shown great improvements. She has come out of her shell and now explores the dorm greeting people with a wagging tail! Her trainer is so happy to see her open up. No one is a stranger to Kayla!

Kayla loves ice! This is actually a good thing for her trainer, since she is not treat or toy motivated. This helps him teach her new things, which she absorbs like a sponge. I know her trainer has said it before and he'll say it again . . . it surprises him how smart, sweet and loving Kayla is. She knows all of her basic commands well except she is a little slow to "sit" or "down". No worries. She's smart and will be a pro at them very soon. She also knows a few extras:  "leave it", "easy" and "water".  Kayla also lets her trainer know when she needs to go out by whispering softly, so he has to keep an eye out for that.  LOL.

Kayla learned "jump" this week. No problems there. Show and tell was this past Friday and Kayla did the best yet. She ran through her commands like a champ!

Stairs. No Problem.

Kayla is perfecting her commands this week and doing a great job of it!  She still needs a little work on "jump", but no worries, there's plenty of time.  She has come out of her shell a lot this week and has become playful.  The alternate trainer ran through all of her commands and she did them without any trouble.  She amazes her trainer at how smart she is.

This week Kayla practiced on the stairs.  No problems in that department with Kayla.  She did them on the first try.  She is such a quick learner.  Her trainer is very excited to be working with such a smart, sweet and loving dog.  Some family is going to be so lucky to adopt Kayla.

Brains and Beauty

Hello Peeps!  My name is Ms. Firecracker, but my new found friends here at the prison call me Kayla.  I think that name fits me because it's a pretty name and I sure am pretty!  Just look at my beautiful coat and my alluring eyes are sure to get your attention.

I'm starting to like my temporary home.  I'm getting more comfortable here.  It's a lot different than the track, but I'm making the most of my time here learning all these cool commands.  I know "hurry", "let's go", "release", "heel" and "bed" well, but I'm a little slow to respond to "kennel", "wait", "here", "sit", "down" and "jump".  My trainer says I'm a smart girl, fast learner and easy to teach, so I'm sure I'll have those figured out real soon too.

I'm a laid back girl that's very sweet and loving.  Take a chance and pick me!  I will not disappoint.

Soaking up Knowledge

This week Kayla has been getting used to being in the dorm with all these new people! She is shy but has opened up a little. She still surprises her inmate trainer with how smart she is. She still shows no interest in toys as of yet, but her trainer is sure she will continue to open up as she explores more.

He is still introducing her to all of her commands. She is like a sponge when it comes to learning new things. The only commands they haven't worked on yet are "down" and "jump/off". He is still very excited to be training her and looks forward to teaching this sweet, beautiful and smart girl.

Smart Girl

Miss Firecracker's inmate trainer has decided to name her Kayla. She seems to like that name a lot. Since this is their first week together, they have not been doing much training other than teaching them their names, the commands for bed and kennel, and training them to do leash walking. So far Kayla has shown that she is very smart and sweet. She is also cautious of new things. She shows no interest in toys yet but loves treats. Her inmate trainer is extremely excited to train Kayla this session and is sure it's going to be a wonderful experience.
