Gold Star for Mambo

Mambo was a little confused by the changes during swap week, but he passed his final exam with flying colors regardless.  He is missing all the treats he used to get for following commands, but his eagerness to please is shining through, as he follows direction no matter what.

His trainers hope that his forever family is going to fall in love with this sweet boy and appreciate all the hard work he’s put into his training these past 12 weeks.

Born to Run

Mambo’s easy going nature has only heightened this week with the heat wave.  He enjoys wandering around until he finds a cool spot, and then lounging for as long as he can.

He does have quite a bit of energy in the mornings, however.  If they get an early turn-out and he has time outside before breakfast he loves to run and play.  If it’s close to breakfast time though he will do his business quickly and then come wait at the gate to be fed.

Training is still going well, although he’s figured out that his trainer doesn’t always have treats when she’s giving him his commands.  Together they are working on him following his commands with or without a treat afterwards.

Got a Lot to Say

It’s been an interesting time with Mambo this week for his trainers. He’s mastered the “Speak” command, and now he has plenty to say! He wants to have whole conversations with his trainers now during training and anytime they’re practicing commands.

Mambo knows all of his commands, but is still mastering “Release”, “Here”, “Stay”, and “Jump”. His trainers have tried to start practicing commands without using any treats, which has been an adjustment for Mambo since he is so food motivated. He’s pushing forward though, and should have it down by it’s time to go to his forever home.

Deep Thoughts with Mambo

Mambo continues to work hard at getting his commands down. His trainer describes him as eager to please and a deep thinker. She says you can tell by looking at him that he’s thinking hard about his next move.

Mambo is coming out of his shell even more and running with the other dogs. His trainer says it’s been quite a journey with Mambo, and she is glad that she’s had the opportunity to go on it with him.

Grasshopper Spotter

Mambo has earned the nickname of “Eeyore” from all the ladies training this class of greyhounds, due to his slow pace and manner. He will meander his way around the room, stopping for rubs and ear-scratches from everyone, before finding a quiet place to sleep.

However, he has started having a lot more “puppy” moments where he runs around in circles and playfully chases whatever is nearby. Yesterday he followed a grasshopper around the yard until it finally jumped to the other side of the fence.

His trainer says no one can help but smile at Mambo and his laid-back self, and that they all feel his is doing just as much for them, if not more, than they are doing for him.

So Very Smart

Mambo’s eyes are so expressive, you can tell when he’s thinking about his next move during training. He has become very treat motivated, and has started doing his commands before being asked. As clever as that is, his trainers are working on making sure he is listening to and following commands instead of anticipating them.

Mambo is becoming more comfortable with the noise level around him, and likes to share a big pillow with another dog whenever he gets a chance. He has started having little bursts of play when he thinks no one is looking. He is very good at sitting still while being groomed, especially while having his teeth brushed.

Such a Sweetheart

Mambo’s trainers say he has an incredible level of empathy, and can sense when someone around him is feeling sad or down and needs some special attention and loving.

He is coming out of his kennel more, but prefers to be out and about when it’s quiet. When it gets loud in the playroom he likes to go back and take a nap. He has also started smiling at his trainers, showing them all his teeth when he’s happy that they’re petting and cuddling him.

His training is going very well. His trainers are currently working on perfecting and refining some of the commands that Mambo picked up quickly in the beginning.

Sleepy Head

Mambo is definitely prepared to be the couch potato of his new family. As much as he loves getting attention from everyone (and they love giving it to him!) his favorite place to be is curled up in his kennel taking a nap.

He is going up and down the stairs wonderfully, even though his trainer is no longer using treats to motivate him. He’s also doing well with the commands “leave it”, “wait”, and “release”. More news to come on this sweet pup soon!

Wonderful Boy

Mambo has continued to build his reputation this week as a quiet and sweet boy, who prefers quiet time in his kennel to the noisy play room with all the other dogs.  He loves the people he’s met at Pulaski, and leaves happiness behind wherever he goes.

Mambo has mastered the “kennel” command, and will come down the stairs on his own (although he wants a treat to go up them!).  This upcoming week Mambo and his trainer will be working on “wait”, “release”, and “leave it”.

A Gentle Giant

Mambo is the biggest dog in his class, but his trainer describes him as a “gentle giant”.  He is laid back and calm, and just loves to be around people. He enjoys the attention of getting scratches and having his ears played with, but he also enjoys playing independently with his furry red woodpecker.  His trainer also says he is very curious and likes to investigate everything around him.

Mambo is a very attentive dog who seems to know how you’re feeling and want to love on you when you need it.  He has brought a smile to everyone’s face at Pulaski, and they’re already imagining what a dream addition he is going to make to his forever family.  Mambo’s trainer says she just cannot praise this good boy enough!
