Time's Up....Forever Home Awaits

Wait.. what… 10 weeks are up already?!!  Spencer’s inmate trainer says that it’s been wonderful to watch Spencer grow and learn!  He arrived unsure of his new surroundings in this noisy new place and now he’s a happy guy.  He did great with his graduation practice test which made his inmate trainer very proud!

Spencer’s inmate trainer says that he’s going to be sad to see Spencer leave, but knows he’s going to make his new family very happy!

One Groovy Hound

This past week was swap week, which is when all of the trainers swap dogs to make sure the good boys and girls take commands from other, new people. It's also to test for separation anxiety. Well, Spencer's swap week trainer had the pleasure of training this dashingly handsome boy!

Spencer was born in the wrong decade, because the best way to describe him is that he is a trip, like really far out, maaaan. Like, groovy. He is so laid-back and mellow and gentle. He also makes a great wingman. Whenever he's on a walk with his trainer, he is always checking to make sure nobody is sneaking up behind to spook you! Back off, ninjas!

But when he gets alone in a quiet room with toys, look out! He goes nuts, always playing with utter abandon. Spencer was a lot of fun and his trainer has done a fine job of teaching him all of the needed skills to make his life in his forever home a happy one!

Happy Sweet Boy

Once again it has been another great week with Spencer. It amazes his trainer how far he has come since his arrival. He started out scared of his own shadow and now he goes over to random people wagging his tail. Although he still isn't too fond of loud noises, he had a really nice visit today and performed all of his commands perfectly. He also had the honor of running with a little greyhound named Sansa. Spencer was a perfect gentleman and played very nicely with this much smaller greyhound. His trainer believes that he will do just fine if other big dogs are in the house. Spencer is one of his favorite dogs that he's ever trained and he knows that Spencer will make his new family so happy!

Buddy Boy, Spencer

Happy New Year from Spencer and the whole SCG Team at Jenkins!  His trainer will always remember he spent the new year of 2018 with his buddy boy, Spencer.  He said Spencer is such a great dog and he is a little sad that he will be leaving soon for his new home, but knows he will adapt just fine.

Spencer always makes his trainer's day.  He greets him every morning, bright and early, with his sweet personality, tail wagging and a smile on his face.  No joke.  Spencer has a cute little grin when he's happy.  You will have to see it to believe it.

Spencer continues to open up more and more every day.  He will now go up to people he hardly knows, wanting a pat on the head.  He is also responding faster to his commands.  He knows them all very well, but is still a little slow to respond to sit.  No worries.  His trainer is working  extra hard on this and knows he will have it down pat before graduation.

Sweet Lil Peanut Head

It's Christmas time here at the Second Chance Greyhounds program. Christmas is usually one of the toughest times being away from family, but being able to spend it with Spencer made this time of year so much easier for his trainer. Spencer has really lifted his trainer's mood this holiday season. He is such a sweet and friendly dog. He really came out of his shell this past couple of weeks. He loves, and we mean really loves, play time. After training, they have play time and he'll run around the training room in fast small circles until he tires himself out.

He pretty much has all of his commands mastered, although he is still working on sit and down. These are two of the toughest for Greyhounds, but no worries. Spencer will have these mastered before the graduation cap touches his sweet little peanut head. At the moment, Spencer is sleeping peacefully in his kennel awaiting the last potty break of the day. He'll get his Christmas gift before bed, which is a peanut butter-filled Kong. Check back next week for more updates and Merry Christmas!

Belly Rubs for Christmas

Wow, what a great week for Spencer. He has come such a long way since he arrived! This week, he's made so much progress with his training. He is now sitting and downing on his own. Although he does side-saddle during sits and downs, his trainer thinks that he should be able to work that out of him by the time he graduates.

His new favorite thing is to roll on his back while in the kennel or on a bed. So, his trainer has been tagging it as belly for a command. So now while Spencer is lying down, his trainer tells him belly. He'll roll over and wait for him to rub his belly. The Second Chance staff came down, and Spencer had to get in front of everyone and do his commands. He did awesome, and did every command without any problem. Spencer really is a great dog and he'll make his new family so happy! Will it be you?

Sweet and Loyal

His trainer can't believe it, but it's already been 4 weeks since Spencer arrived. It really is true that time flies when you're having fun. He is such a sweet and loyal friend and his trainer is having a blast working with him. He still isn't too fond of being around large crowds or loud noises, but is improving.  Prison life is very noisy, with all the radios going off all the time.  His trainer knows that he'll be happy when the life of retirement reaches the free world and he meets his forever family.

His training is going great and he now does all of the basic commands, while polishing down and jump. His trainer is confident that he will have these mastered in another week or so. They had a chance to do some stair training this past week, and his trainer is happy to report that Spencer did just fine. He does need to slow down a little and going down the stairs, so check back next week for more updates on Sly Spencer!

Oink. Oink

Sweet Spencer is improving every week with his basic commands.  Spencer's favorite command is "heel".  His trainers are working extra hard this week on sit and down, but are confident he will have them mastered very soon.  Spencer has not revealed his favorite treat yet, but he does enjoy marshmallows as a reward.

Spencer enjoys a quick play session after training.  His favorite toy is a yellow pig that "oinks".  He likes to take it to the nearest bed and very gently bite it, over and over again.  He can't get enough of that pig.

Check back next week for more updates on the Sweet Mr. Spencer.

Shy Sweetie

Spencer has made a lot of progress this week and is coming out of his shell. He's starting to get used to his new environment and his trainer has him out of his kennel a lot to help him grow more comfortable with his surroundings. He is a little unsure and scares easily, but he has improved so much already since his arrival. His trainer has been introducing him to a few basic commands and so far he has been working on bed, heel, kennel, sit, let's go, wait, and hurry. He is catching on to all of them very well and the only one of these that is proving a challenge is sit, which is super common for Greyhounds because of their long legs. He is getting the hang of it and his trainer knows that with a little bit more time he will master it. Spencer is a very sweet and loyal Greyhound and his trainer is having a blast getting to know him. His nickname is Cow because of his coloring. Check back next week for more updates on sweet Spencer!

Learning The Ropes

It's a new training session at SCG and Spencer is learning the ropes.  He was a little nervous on intake and didn't know what to make of the shiny floors, but in a few short days his confidence has grown.  He now walks on them without any trouble.  So many new sounds, sights and smells for Spencer to explore.

Spencer is a breeze walking on a leash.  He's such a sweet boy and his trainer is looking forward to the next ten weeks getting to know him.  One look into his light brown eyes and you will be hooked.  Just one look...
