Best Boy Barney

Well, it is Barney's last week here with his trainers and what else is there to say? He is a wonderful guy and he is so ready for his new home. He's done great the past few weeks and has taken to his training very well. This past week was spent just going over all of his training routine, consisting of sit, stay, down, wait, jump, off, leave it, give, bed, here, release, kennel, heel, hurry, let's go, and leash walking. All of this training paid off quite well and reflects in how well he behaves and obeys commands. His trainer can say with the utmost confidence that Barney is ready for his new home and family!

Cute As Can Be

Barney got down to business this week and mastered all his commands. His trainer will now work on distance and duration in the last few weeks of training. His trainer can’t believe how fast the last 7 weeks have went.

Barney is learning toy etiquette. He is such a gentle soul that his trainer has had no problems with him. He loves to play with toys, but will leave them alone until it’s time. Barney’s favorite thing to do is run on the big yard. He absolutely loves it, and his trainer enjoys watching him run. Barney goes where his heart takes him. .. as free as can be.

Half Way Home!

Barney is having fun at Jenkins and having fun learning. He has been introduced to all of the basic commands, except “down”, which will be this week. He’s doing great with all of them. Now to reinforce and refine.

Barney likes to play with toys. His favorite is a yellow bird/snake. Huh? Not sure what that is, but is squeaks and he loves it. He likes going to the small yard (covered basketball court) and play fetch. It was’t a problem for Barney to run and get the toy, it was the bringing it back. He finally figured out the concept of it. LOL.

Barney also loves to run on the big yard with his greyhound buddies. It’s a good workout and they can get up to full speed, which is fast! All are joyously tired after a big yard run.

The Best Boy

The middle of the training session has arrived and Barney continues to improve with his commands. The other day, he got to run on the big yard for the first time. A combination of healing stitches (from being neutered), bad weather and coronavirus kept all the dogs out of the big yard until now. He LOVED getting to run on the big yard! He had a blast. He ran the whole time and wanted to keep going even after his time was up. Well, it was about five minutes of actual running and then time for rest, in classic greyhound style. He ran with four other dogs and they all got along great.

His trainer finally got Barney to sit on his own! Big excitement, big treats; his trainer always makes it a big deal when that happens to get him excited about accomplishing new things. There’s still a lot of work to do and a ways to go, but his trainer feels great with his progress. This is why he loves training these dogs – to see them go from a blank slate to learning all these commands, and more importantly: how to learn!

So Darn Sweet!

We are into our third week with Barney and all the hard work has paid off. He has a firm grasp on most of the basic commands. Barney is doing so much better this week on his stay, heel and bed. His trainer plans to introduce sit, down and jump this week.

Overall, Barney’s trainer is as proud as he can be. His trainer said he is so darn sweet and he loves him so much. He knows Barney will be a greyt friend to whomever is lucky enough to adopt him.

Easy Going

Here we are! The second week of training. Barney and his trainer have gotten to know each other and are into training mode. They train at least 3 times a day for about 15 minutes per session. This week was all about heeling and waiting at the door, bed and stay. it was also a lot of leash walking. Barney is a natural at that, so life is good.

Barney’s trainer said he couldn’t ask for a better partner. Barney is so easy going and willing to listen. He will make a greyt best friend for someone. Hopefully that someone is a hugger, because Barney is definitely a “Hug Me” kind of dog. Until next week…

Irresistible Ears!

Barney is a beautiful, tall red brindle boy.  He’s got the cutest ears that lay completely flat most of the time, but pop up like two giant sails when something catches his eye out of curiosity.  His trainer says he looks just like a deer when he does it.

Barney’s trainer’s favorite thing about him is his big brown eyes.  He’s never had a greyhound that just stares so directly at you, like he’s looking into your soul.  Barney is a very friendly and laid back boy too.  In just a few days, Barney and his trainer have bonded like old friends.  Barney is going to do great at Jenkins and his trainer is excited to see what lies ahead.
