Saying Goodbye

Jules’ prison training time is coming to an end.  Jules has come a long way in just 10 short weeks. He is still a little shy, but plays more and does all of his commands.  He passed his graduation tests!  His inmate trainer never had any doubts that Jules could.  His trainer is thankful for the time they got to spend together.  He admits that Jules is his favorite dog so far and will never be forgotten.

Loving and Gentle

This week was filled with many proud moments for Jules’s inmate trainer!  In the past weeks Jules has been shy and unsure of so many things that doing commands in front of a large crowd was difficult for him.  That has now changed!  This week he did all of his commands without treats! His inmate trainer says that watching this wonderful dog transition has been a stark reminder of the true reward in training.

Jules is working on figuring the toy thing out.  He currently likes to horde them all to see how big his collection will become.  He loves to give kisses and gets a little jealous if he sees his inmate trainer give another dog love.  Jules has a loving gentle demeanor and once he’s bonded with you he’s your best friend.  His inmate trainer says that it’s sad to think that their time together is almost over.  He says that out of all the dogs in the program Jules has been his favorite and he’ll never forget this amazing guy!

Collecting All Toys

Three weeks left in the program and Jules starts coming out of his shell and he plays with toys now!  He prefers to collect them in his kennel and lay on top of them.  His inmate trainer says that maybe Jules thinks he is part chicken and the toys are his eggs!

His inmate trainer says that he forgot to latch Jules’s crate since Jules goes in and closes his own door.  He walked away leaving Jules in his closed crate returning a couple of hours later to find that Jules had let himself out stolen his inmate’s shirt and hat to lay on then shut the door behind himself as if nothing happened!

Training is still progressing nicely.  Since Jules likes the “kiss” command so they start with it as it helps Jules feel successful right off the bat.  They work their way into some of the other commands he likes such as “heel” or “here” while throwing in a few that he’s slow to respond to like “sit,” “down,” or “stay.”

Jules is a guy who will let you know if he feels that something is out of place.  It’s just his way of saying; hey take a second look at this!  He’s a shy guy, but didn’t seem to have any problems being away from his primary trainer.  Oh, and one more important bit of information - his favorite scratch spot is under his chin!

You Got Kibble?

Hi! My name is Jules Berger, you probable recognize my name, after all… I am kind of a big deal.  I was a professional racer until I grew tired of being an awesome winner and fabulous all the time. So I decided to retire and give others a chance at greatness.  Yea, I’m know, I’m awesome.

So when I retired I decided to go through this training gig so I could continue my fabulousness into retirement. I didn’t really realize that I’d be coming to this loud place called prison, but I have this cool inmate trainer that keeps me safe and is teaching me new tings.  I did try to tell him that I already knew everything, but he offered me treats so I thought I’d humor him and follow through with his requests.

Now, I’m getting the hang of all this new stuff and even learned this thing called “kiss”.  It’s kinda weird to kiss a human on the cheek, but my trainer says it’s good for my confidence to learn easy fun things.  I say dish up the treats and we can talk about it.  He also says I need to work on my people skills and not to bark at people I’m not sure of, but how else do I speak to them?  I don’t mean nothin’ by it just want them to know how awesome I am; how they gonna know if I don’t tell ‘em?

So this graduation thing is coming up then I’ll be off to my new forever home.  I hear that I’m going to get lots of love, toys, and naps with this new family!  How cool is that!  I sure hope they know about this kibble and reward system I’ve got going on…

One Comical Guy

Jules’s inmate trainer says that if he had to compare Jules to a movie character he would choose Paul Bart from Mall Cop.  Jules is a big, goofy, comical guy who is ever vigilant to safety and security.  His inmate trainer says that Jules has this look where he holds his head at a tilt with ears flopped forward and you’d swear that his eyes have crossed!  It’s highly enduring and always funny!

His training is progressing slowly, but really well.  They keep training short and simple to help build Jules’ confidence.  Jules is a shy guy until he’s outside then it’s all open mouthed smiles, curly tail up and wagging with happiness!  Seems like Jules just doesn’t like the loud environment of prison life and prefers the calmer outdoor atmosphere.  His inmate trainer believes that he will excel in a home environment.

As mentioned before, Jules will let out a bark at people he is unsure of.  His inmate trainer says that he is grateful for his time with Jules during the transition from professional racer to loving family member.

Toys? I'll take those!

Jules’s inmate trainer says that after spending the past month with Jules he now notices that when the sun rises his shadow goes from having two legs to four!  Jules is making progress in the trust department and seems to have a bit of natural guard dog in him.  He will bark if he deems someone unworthy of his trust.

Jules is not treat motivated so training is going a little slower.  He inmate trainer works on training early in the morning when Jules is hungry and Jules will sit like a big boy for his food; although he’s not too happy about it.  His inmate trainer tells Jules that the world will not end because he has to sit for his food.  This doesn’t seem to make Jules any happier!

Jules tackled the stairs this week and did great!  He’s still not showing much interest in toys, but seems to be hoarding them in his kennel.  He takes them o’ so gently in his mouth, runs to his kennel and places them in the corner with his bones always being vigilant about closing his door behind him.   You know, just in case he was followed by someone not in his circle of trust.

Jules is a shy guy who’s loving and full of personality.  His inmate trainer is looking forward to the days ahead with this sweet guy.

Progress is Made

Jules is finally settling in and coming to terms that his new environment is a safe one.  He is a bit choosy about which humans he will give the distinct pleasure of letting them pet him but he loves every dog as if they are his very best friends.

As far as training goes, they are still searching for that special something that motivates him into action.  Right now treats don't do much for him but they are going to try cut up hot dogs this week and see how that floats his boat.  If that doesn't work, his inmate will be convinced he is truly from another planet and is not a real dog! (just kidding)

Fear not though, he does see the wheels turning in his head when they train and feels confident he will be obeying commands as if they came down to him like Moses off the mountain.

Personality wise, Jules can be very loving and sweet if you are part of his closely guarded inner circle but he will give you a quick bark if he doesn't like the way to are looking at him following by a speedy get away to the sweet safety of his blessed kennel where he shuts his door signaling that he is done with you for now and it is time for a quick nap.

What a character!  Here he is doing his trick!

Shy But Goofy

After two full weeks, the handsome and shy Mr. Jules is starting to come out of his shell.  He is still wary of others but it is getting better. They train in the morning when it's quieter, keeping the sessions short and fun. We're working to find the perfect yummy treat to motivate Jules!  He does love attention and gets it from others in the pod.

He has a face that if you saw it on an SPCA commercial you would immediately donate all of your money and possibly refi your house so that you could give more.  The big guy loves his inmate trainer so much that if he stands near his kennel he will come out and grab the leg of his pants and try to pull him in as if to say "come in here with me where it's safe'.

Jules may be shy right now but he makes up for it in personality. He's a bit goofy at times but that is what makes him so lovable!

Man's Best Friend

Jules is a shy guy with a strong undercurrent of mystery and loyalty that has drawn his inmate trainer close to him.  His inmate trainer says that dogs like Jules are the reason for the old adage “dogs are man’s best friend”.  His trainer says that Jules is truly one a million.  He believes that training is going really well, but he’s letting Jules set a comfortable pace until his confidence grows in this new environment.  To help build up his confidence his inmate trainer spends half the day with Jules on a leash practicing leash etiquette and showing him that there’s nothing going to hurt him. The other half is spent letting him explore his surroundings on his own terms. He has gotten to where he will venture out to find his inmate trainer if he can’t see him right away.  If he gets scared he will break for the safety of his kennel and shuts the door.  After seeing Jules do this his trainer tied a rag on the door to make it easier for Jules to close and it works, Jules closes his own kennel door!

Jules’s inmate trainer says that he is grateful for the opportunity to play a part in helping Jules find a forever home where he will be loved and cared for.

Retirement Training Time

Jules has been in the prison training program for a few days.  In this short time his inmate trainer has felt a connection with this sweet boy unlike any other the dog he’s trained.  He says that Jules is a shy boy, but may have a rebel hidden in there somewhere.  He says this because Jules has a crush on a girl he recently met, Holly.  He licks her ears and face every chance he gets.  You’d think that Holly wouldn’t appreciate this shower of attention, but apparently Jules has some serious swag because she flirts right back!

Since Jules is naturally shy his inmate trainer plans to work on building his confidence.  He is starting to understand and respond to “hurry,” “let’s go,” “kennel,” “wait,” “here,” and “bed.”  His inmate trainer is looking forward to watching Jules come out of his shell.  He believes that Jules is going to be a wonderful pet for some lucky family out there!
