Lola and Her Return

Lola is being returned to Second Chance Greyhounds by her owners due to a serious illness they must deal with.  She is really a sweet dog and I'm sure we will find her forever home soon.  Please read her blog, she is quite a character!!

The Social Butterfly

This weekend Lola proved to everyone what a social butterfly she really is.

Saturday morning we went to the Big Shanty Festival in Kennesaw with a few of our Greyhound friends.  We strolled the festival chatting up Greyhound adoption with everyone who stopped to pet the dogs.  Lola ahd a blast kissing on everyone!!  Quite a few business cards were distributed so hopefully Second Chance Greyhounds will receive a few applications.

Saturday evening we had an Easter Egg Hunt and Cookout at my home.  There were 14 Greyhounds in attendance.  Lola really did show her stuff and had everyone wondering if she had hunted Easter Eggs before - she definitely has a knack for this - who knew?!!  She was so funny, rolling the eggs along with her muzzle, then cracking them open and devouring the contents.  I have a quick video of this that I will hopefully get on her blog tonight.  It's absolutely hilarious!

We did go to bed early Saturday night because we had another gig on Sunday - a meet and greet at the Sprint for Cancer 5k/10k Race.  We were up VERY early Sunday morning to get to Atlantic Station to set up our booth and get settled.  Soon after the race concluded, there were scads of very interested folks surrounding our booth.  Of course, the Greyhounds were a bit hit as they usually are at any public outing!  I really think we'll get a few applications from this event as well.

All in all, it was a busy weekend for the humans and the hounds.  I think everyone is happy Monday is here so we can all rest up for next weekend!  Lola, too!  She said being a socialite is very exhausting. :)

Tidbits About Lola

  1. Lola is definitely a "people" dog.  She loves her humans and really doesn't seem to "need" the other Greyhounds.
  2. Lola DOES smile.  I didn't doubt Kim at all but was absolutely thrilled when she smiled last night after dinner.  She seems to do this when she is VERY happy.  I will try to get this in a video or in a photo.
  3. Lola loves fruit.  As I mentioned before, she love strawberries but now I know she likes bananas, too.  I put these in her Kong yesterday and she devoured it.  This is good - very good!
  4. Lola is very affectionate doling out kisses to everyone, including my own Greyhounds Sugar and Lucy.  I've caught her kissing each of them!  Oh, and Lucy is very jealous of Lola when she is giving me kisses!  She immediately will come to me and try to butt in to give me her kisses instead as if I should ONLY get kisses from her and no one else!  Funny!
  5. Lola seems to have a favorite toy and once that is deemed her favorite, will always come back to it time and time again.  At my house it seems to be a very dirty and well used stuffie that looks like a carrot that is about 4 years old and, oddly enough, still squeaks! It's her new BFF.
  6. Lola would rather not have a bath - EVER!!  All I can say here is thank God you don't have to bathe Greyhounds very often!  She does, however, like manicures and pedicures! :)
  7. Lola is a good eater who loves her kibble.  I've been feeding her Purina Pro Plan Turkey and Barley samples I obtained at a dog show I was at last weekend.  She seems to like it but I think I will probably switch her to Innova Evo, which is what I feed my girls.
  8. Lola is not big on being outside.  She will go out and do her thing but she usually wants back in soon thereafter.  On the other hand, my three love to lay in the yard sunbathing!
  9. As mentioned before, Lola loves Orvis bead beds which is somewhat surprising since most dogs are afraid of the noise the bead beds make.  Not Lola, she loves them!
  10. After meals, Lola "retires" to her Orvis bead bed to rest.  Kim, did you teach her this?

I'll try to get some pictures this weekend as we'll be out and about enjoying the sunshine with our Greyhound friends at various local events!!  It seems Lola is becoming quite the socialite!!

More later!!

The Manicure

Well, it was actually a manicure AND a pedicure.  I figured it was time for Lola to get her nails trimmed.  I don't actually use nail clippers but use a Dremel tool which basically sands the nail much like a nail file.

I didn't know how Lola would react to the Dremel tool since she hadn't ever seen one.  The track trainers usually clip their nails and not very often at that, or so it seems.  Lola's nails were now long and sharp as, well, a nail, so it was time.  I gathered her up and led her into the spare bathroom where I usually Dremel my girls' nails.  I closed the door and turned on the Dremel tool.  She never looked down, never flinched, never said a word.  She stood there and let me Dremel all four feet, without mishap.  I'm used to them snatching their feet away just when the sanding barrel is there on the nail, causing me to actually Dremel my own nails.  But not Lola, she was very good and all of my nails remain intact.

I was so very proud of her.  She received a marshmallow as a treat!  Umm, umm!  And yes, oddly enough, the trainers typically use marshallows as treats for the kennel dogs after their race.  So, most have had these before and most love them and I must say, Lola is no exception. She adores them.

Something else she adores is the Large Orvis bead bed that I have for her in my bedroom.  I have many Orvis beds in the house (9 total, I think!) - most of them are the Extra Large size.  This Large one was ordered by mistake but I must admit that most of the smaller females love it.

After breakfast and after dinner, my three girls are usually scattered about the house sacked out on the various dog beds.  Lola, on the other hand, can always be found in the bedroom on that one Large Orvis bead bed.  She does love it!

Lola Likes Strawberries

This morning, as I do every morning, I doled out one strawberry to each of my girls as their "after breakfast" treat.  I also gave one to Lola to see if she would eat it.  She took it in her mouth, then dropped it, looked up at me, looked at Lucy munching on her strawberry and then decided (I think) that it was something she should eat. Heck, everyone else was eating it so why shouldn't she? She then picked it up and proceeded to the nearest dog bed where she then devoured it, stem and all.  Nothing like a little roughage first thing in the morning! :)

I don't encourage feeding "people" food, however, fruits are very good for them and most Greyhounds will eat strawberries, bananas, apples, oranges, peaches, etc. . . . you get the idea.  I've even dehydrated these fruits for my girls for treats.  It's a much better alternative to dog biscuits which can add pounds to their sleek bodies.  And unlike dog biscuits, it's a treat you can share with your dog!

I think tomorrow we will try a banana and see if Ms. Lola likes them.  I am guessing she probably does since her trainer also fed bananas as treats during her kennel days.  More later!!
